The European Union's (EU) goals of reducing energy dependence and reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are to be achieved primarily by increasing production from renewable energy sources (RES). However, due to the features of renewable sources such as unpredictability and lack of availability, it is necessary to increase the flexibility of the s...

When considering geothermal project development, the complex assignment of aggregating and quantifying the influencing factors and their interactions is an inevitable task that enables comprehensive assessment of the geothermal energy utilization from many different aspects. The main purpose of the scientific work is a revised set of criteria for c...

There are numerous oil fields that are approaching the end of their lifetime and that have great geothermal potential considering temperature and water cut. On the other hand, the oil industry is facing challenges due to increasingly stringent environmental regulations. An example of this is the case of France where oil extraction will be forbidden...

The crucial design elements of a good capacity remuneration mechanism are market orientation, insurance of long-term power system adequacy, and optimal cross-border generation capacity utilization. Having in mind these design elements, this research aims to propose a financially fair pricing mechanism that will guarantee enough new capacity and wil...

One of the major tools for the implementation of low carbon strategy goals is increasing the penetration of renewable sources, which are mostly intermittent in nature, into the power system that also increases the needs for additional storage and flexibility capacity in the system. Among other possible solutions, one very most promising tool is the...

By joining the European Union, the Republic of Croatia has undertaken the obligation to fulfil certain energy goals, which include reducing greenhouse gases and improving economic opportunities by using renewable energy sources (RES). Based on the characteristics of the Lunjkovec - Kutnjak geothermal field in Croatia and the planned project for the...

This paper presents the main features of a multiple-criteria decision-making tool for economic and environmental assessment of enhanced geothermal systems projects. The presented holistic approach takes into account important influencing factors such as technical specifications, geological characteristics, spatial data, energy and heat prices, and...
Conference Paper
Full-text available
This paper presents the main characteristics of a decision-making support tool for economic and environmental assessment of enhanced geothermal systems given a particular site. The tool examines the enhanced geothermal systems projects in a holistic way considering: technology details, geothermal site characteristics, energy prices and spatial data...
Conference Paper

Nowadays, besides the conventional electricity generation, it is necessary to get new renewable sources which would be economically and ecologically profitable in the long-term. Along with wind and solar energy, tides, waves etc. it is worth noting that geothermal energy could be in use as well, especially when enhanced geothermal systems are used....

Project
The main objective of MEET is to capitalize on the exploitation of the widest range of fluid temperature in EGS (Enhanced geothermal systems) plants and abandoned oil wells. The aim is to demonstrate the lower cost of small-scale production of electricity and heat in wider areas with various geological environments, in order to support a large increase of geothermalbased production sites in Europe in a near future. In order to boost the market penetration of geothermal power in Europe, MEET project main goal is to demonstrate the viability and sustainability of EGS with electric and thermal power generation in all kinds of geological settings with four main types of rocks: granitic (igneous intrusive), volcanic, sedimentary and metamorphic with various degrees of tectonic overprint by faulting and folding.
