Introduction
I have focused on analysing the power relations and political dynamics influence uses/access to natural resources from a critical and intersectional perspective. I have led Participatory Action Research on socio- environmental conflicts, integrating in-depth case studies with large-scale comparative analyses. I analyse the role of violence and organisations and alternatives through commoning practices and counter narratives of social movements for environmental and social justice.

With the acceleration of airport construction and expansion in low- and middle-income countries, a multi-disciplinary scholarship that relates infrastructural development to social aviation is unfolding. By shifting the focus to the Global South, the authors of this book reveal colonial trajectories, the role of foreign investment and ownership, an...
Trained in the fields of ecological economics and political ecology, we are four women activist-researchers motivated by and interested in contributing to processes of social transformation. In this chapter, we make visible part of our critical thinking process in academia, departing from our experience in the fields of food sovereignty, commons an...
Which role plays the more-than-human world in shaping the possibilities for contentious actions and politics? We discuss this question by revisiting reflections from social movement theory, agrarian studies, and commons management, and by reviewing empirical cases of protest significantly shaped by ecological endowments. Distinct political ecologic...
The Maya-Q’eqchi’ are the people that occupy the most territory in Guatemala and that historically, like other indigenous peoples, have resisted multiple waves of dispossession through ‘communitarian weavings’ and by maintaining their sacred relationship with the land and maize. In this article, I analyze how and why temporary and long-lasting ‘agr...
This teaching guide is aimed at professors, educators, and researchers interested in connecting research, teaching and art to better understand this globalized world, full of conflicts and so many uncertainties. It can also be used in work with students to build skills that allow them to develop collaboration, creativity, dialogue, reflection and c...
This study illustrates how, despite the diversity of women environmental defenders and their movements around the world, there are near-universal patterns of violence threatening their survival. Violence against women environmental defenders, often perpetrated by government-backed corporations, remains overlooked. Research on this issue importantly...
Recent research and policies recognize the importance of environmental defenders for global sustainability and emphasize their need for protection against violence and repression. However, effective support may benefit from a more systematic understanding of the underlying environmental conflicts, as well as from better knowledge on the factors tha...
Reducing Air Travel in a Just Way
Flying is the fastest way to heat the planet. How can a reduction of aviation and its climate impact be achieved in a just way? The report, published in December 2019, fills an important gap: While it has been clear to the climate movement and civil society that “green growth” of aviation is and will be an illusion...
Rural territories and cultures have been increasingly sacrificed through depopulation, invasion by infrastructure, and the presence of industries which are incompatible with agriculture. Meanwhile, the expansion of urban space through demographic agglomeration and the concentration of activities in cities is leading to a progressively urbanised wor...
In this Draft Chapter 2.1 of the IBES Global Assesment on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services we explored how global transformation involved key tradeoffs, and inequalities, as growing interactions drove economic growth but also degradation. Accelerations in consumption & interconnection have had tradeoffs.
Environmental justice activism is to this age what the workers’ movement was for the industrial age - one of the most influential social movements of its time. Yet, despite its consistent progress since the 1970s, environmental justice protests seem to get lost in the morass of information on broader environmental issues.
In contrast, labour confl...
Although studies on environmental conflicts have engaged with the subject of violence, a multidimensional approach has been lacking. Using data from 95 environmental conflicts in Central America, we show how different forms of violence appear and overlap. We focus on direct, structural, cultural, slow, and ecological forms of violence. Results sugg...
Over the last two decades, the expansion of oil palm and sugarcane plantations in the Polochic Valley (Guatemala) has exacerbated the historical struggle of Maya-Q’eqchi’ peoples for land rights. Based on a mixed-methods approach, I examine the dynamics of the conflict between 1998 and 2014, focusing on the visibility, manifestation and intensity o...
This chapter presents the evaluation of three organic tomato supply chains in Catalonia (Spain): the Local and Global supply chains, and a Mixed supply chain. The evaluation is based on a set of multidimensional indicators derived from different narratives: Commodity, Environmental and Livelihoods. In so doing, we identified the main challenges whe...
colonia, y ah...
The wide-ranging literature on food systems provides multiple perspectives and world views. Various stakeholders define food and food systems in non-equivalent ways. The perception of the performance of food systems is determined by these specific perspectives, and a wide variety of policies responding to different aims are proposed and implemented...
Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) has become one of the most rapidly expanding crops in the world. Many countries have promoted its cultivation as part of a broader rural development strategy aimed at generating paid work and producing both export commodities and biofuels. However, oil palm expansion has often occurred at the expense of ecosystems and s...
While rural transformations are nothing new in human history, current pro-cesses of rural change occur under multiple forces at an unprecedented pace, involving profound and unexpected changes in land use and users, and rapid transformations in the metabolic patterns of rural systems. The present special section aims to shed light on current driver...

Land concentration and land grabbing do not occur only in developing countries in the South; in fact, both are underway in Europe today, argues a new report by European Coordination Via Campesina and Hands off the Land network. It shows how the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) subsidy scheme and other national policies are driving this dynamic.
Researchers and conservation managers largely agree on the relevance of traditional ecological knowledge for natural resource management in indigenous communities, but its prevalence and role as societies modernize are contested. We analyzed the transmission of traditional knowledge among rural local people in communities linked to protected areas...
