With the unprecedented diffusion of virtual reality, the number of application scenarios is continuously growing. As commercial and gaming applications become pervasive, the need for the secure and convenient identification of users, often overlooked by the research in immersive media, is becoming more and more pressing. Networked scenarios such as...
Conference Paper
This paper presents the key phases that need to be addressed for enhancing Quality of Experience for immersive media. The overall immersive media pipeline is analyzed, from creation to rendering and fruition, in order to understand how each phase impacts on the user's Quality of Experience. The relation and inter-dependencies between the different...
Conference Paper
This work aims to investigate the existence of a leading sensory cue in a mulsemedia Virtual Reality application involving three senses: vision, hearing, and touch. On the one hand this study can help in gaining insights into how the different senses contribute to mulsemedia applications in Virtual Reality. On the other, the identification of the l...
Conference Paper
This demo presents an interactive communication system based on immersive media for analyzing the users’ Quality of Experience in collaborative tasks. The interaction between users is studied in an asymmetric scenario where a peer-to-peer communication has been set up between a PC and a Virtual Reality headset. Two application scenarios have been c...

In virtual reality applications, head-mounted displays allow users to explore virtual surroundings, thus creating a high sense of immersion. However, due to the novelty of the technology and the possibility of freely enjoying a 360∘\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \us...
Conference Paper
Omni-directional multimedia is increasing in popularity thanks to the diffusion of head mounted displays for its fruition. The shift from the 2D to omni-directional paradigm implies a change in the way users interact with the visual content. In order to analyze how users explore this new type of stimulus, saliency maps can be exploited. Although se...
Conference Paper
In this contribution, an analysis of the effect of the adoption of virtual reality on human attention is presented. Specifically, we analyzed whether the use of virtual reality leads to a higher level of attention with respect to the use of the same application on a 2D display system. For this purpose, a subjective experiment based on the Stroop te...
Conference Paper
In recent years, we have witnessed a rapid increase in the number of applications of Global Navigation Satellite Systems, which have become the primary source for high-precision positioning and accurate timing. This trend led to two main effects: a strengthening of the performance requirements and an increase in the attempts of altering the estimat...
Conference Paper
Cyber Physical Systems are currently employed in several applications such as healthcare, transport, energy, and industrial systems. However, their communication capability exposes them to several network-level threats. Therefore, ensuring the security of Cyber Physical Systems has become an urgent and vital need. To address this issue, in this wor...

The transport sector is experiencing a fast and revolutionary development, moving towards the deployment of autonomous vehicles. Thus, the accuracy of the position information and the integrity of the navigation system have become key factors. In this paper, we address the problem of the enhancement of the integrity of the position provided by a Gl...
Conference Paper
The current need for increasing the security and capacity of railway lines pushes for the definition of innovative solutions for accurate train positioning systems. In this paper we present a framework that is developed within the ESA co-funded project VOLIERA. The proposed approach relies on technologies widely adopted in the automotive field to e...
Conference Paper
Recently, multi-sensor localization strategies are gaining attention in the railway scenario. In fact, the current trend is to reduce or remove the physical equipment deployed along the track for positioning purposes and to exploit on-board sensors to realize the same functionalities. Although GNSS is one of the major resources to perform this task...
Conference Paper
Satellite-based positioning has been selected as one of the key game changers for the evolution of the European Rail Traffic Management System, introducing strict accuracy, integrity and continuity requirements. However, GNSSs are vulnerable to several degradations that impair the fulfillment of the performance demands. For this reason, we propose...

In this contribution, a flexible context-based security framework is proposed by exploring two types of context: distributed and local. While the former consists in processing information from a set of spatially distributed sources, the second accounts for the local environment surrounding the monitored system. The joint processing of these two typ...
Conference Paper
One of the major challenges in the design of high accuracy, high integrity localization procedures for rail applications based on Global Navigation Satellite Systems is represented by the local hazards that cannot be mitigated by resorting to augmentation networks. By fact, combining smoothed code pseudoranges with (differential) carrier phase and/...
Conference Paper
Current high accuracy positioning systems for transport applications require high safety and high accuracy. Considering that some of the most relevant errors leading to a loss of integrity are multipath and interferences this paper introduces the use of a set of digital maps for mitigating the presence of such hazards. Moreover, relevant statistica...

Cyber physical systems are becoming ubiquitous devices in many fields thus creating the need for effective security measures. We propose to exploit their intrinsic dependency on the environment in which they are deployed to detect and mitigate anomalies. To do so, sensor measurements, network metrics, and contextual information are fused in a unifi...

Nowadays, Global Navigation Satellite Systems are the main source for high accuracy positioning and timing. For this reason, they are essential both for everyday activities and services, and for the industrial and critical infrastructure sectors. Moreover, the spread of increasingly autonomous vehicles results in strict accuracy and integrity requi...
Conference Paper
The objective of this work is to evaluate the feasibility of the integration of visual sensors in the framework of GNSS-based vehicle localization systems. Undoubtedly GNSS plays a key role in vehicle localization. However, the impact of GNSS faults (e.g. satellite and constellation failure), signal degradation (e.g. ionospheric scintillations, mul...
Conference Paper
The upcoming transport revolution is dramatically increasing the navigation integrity requirements. However, traditional techniques for improving the integrity of the position information are usually based on the use of a high number of satellite signals. We propose to add an external integrity source based on the use of on-board visual sensors. Sh...
Conference Paper
In this contribution, a watermarking system for omni-directional images is presented. To cope with the peculiarities of this media, an ad-hoc watermarking technique has been designed. In particular, since the users can only view a small portion of the 360° images, the viewport, the watermarking procedure has been designed for allowing the extractio...
