Introduction
Our lab has just finished two research projects - Ecological studies on soil seed banks of native woody species from Argentine Chaco region and disturbance effects - Vegetative regeneration strategies of native woody species in disturbed forests. Currently, we are starting to work in microsites and biological crusts as bioindicators.

The objective of this study was to analyze the root distribution of grasses and shrubs, at different soil depths, in two ecological sites (ES): highland (forest) and lowland (grassland). The root density (RD) estimation was used as a proxy to test the two-layer hypothesis. Three trenches were dug in both ES and the number of roots m2 was registere...

Prosopis pugionata (Fabaceae) is a halophyte tree species that grows exclusively in Argentina's arid environments, whose woodlands are mainly affected by fires and overgrazing. Here, we describe the wood anatomy and fire wounds of P. pugionata and their relationship with plant size and bark thickness. Besides, we attempt to determine the potential...

In tropical dry forests, fire is a common disturbance and seed traits may drive regeneration of plant populations during these events. In this study, we aimed to (i) investigate whether the seed coat and/or fruit endocarp impose physical dormancy, (ii) check whether physical dormancy confers seed tolerance to heat shocks and (iii) verify whether he...

Resprouting is one of the main regeneration strategies in woody plants that allows post-fire vegetation recovery. However, the stress produced by fires promotes the biosynthesis of compounds which could affect the post-fire resprouting, and this approach has been poorly evaluated in fire ecology. In this study, we evaluate the changes in the concen...

Fire has effects on diverse aspects of plant functioning and development, many of them linked to survival. However, the response of native vegetation to this disturbance possibly reveals a plant strategy to tolerate fire linked to the biosynthesis of compounds such as chlorophylls and secondary metabolites. Over the last two decades, the Chaco region has experienced accelerated land-conversion processes that have developed into a mosaic of disturbances attributable to fires, forest logging, and livestock grazing in its native forests. In this paper, we describe the species composition and structure of two forests in semi-arid Argentine Chaco. Both for...

Forests have resistance that allows them to resist fires without changing to another state, and resilience that allows them to recover after disturbance. These properties are determined by many structural and functional determinants that interact between them. Despite the importance of structural resistance and functional resilience to wildland fir...

The Dry Chaco is mostly known as a forested ecosystem. However it includes natural grasslands, savannas, scrublands, and wetlands. With one of the highest global deforestation rates in the last two decades and only 12% of the area protected, the concern about land-use change in this ecoregion has raised exponentially; but conservation initiatives d...

Roller chopping is a mechanical disturbance widely used in the Chaco region for developing silvopastoral systems. It is viewed with distrust because it is not selective, and may simplify the woody vegetation, unbalancing some ecological processes and causing degradation. The aims of this research were: (a) to explore the possibilities of the Tucker...
