Introduction
My research interests focus on decision-making and public risk perceptions of natural and man-made hazards and new and emerging technologies, with a particular interest in risk and crisis communication. Recent work includes research on public perceptions of new biopolymer technologies, cybersecurity risks, health crises, extreme weather events, and hate speech.

Bioplastics have been presented as a sustainable alternative to products derived from fossil sources. In response, industries have developed innovative products using biopolymers across various sectors, such as food, packaging, biomedical, and construction. However, consumer acceptance remains crucial for their widespread adoption. This study aims...
The development of new biopolymer production technologies is becoming increasingly relevant for tackling the negative impact of linear plastics. Despite these potential benefits, their production and commercialization still face several obstacles that might hinder their widespread adoption. The present systematic review aimed to offer a thorough an...
Vulnerability to heat waves and their negative effects on health vary not only due to individual factors but also due to situational factors, such as time and geography. Hence, we explored seasonal variations and predictors of heat wave feelings of threat across different heat wave geographical susceptibility locations in Portugal. A total of 238 P...
Meteorological services are increasingly moving away from issuing weather warnings based on the exceedance of meteorological thresholds (e.g., windspeed), toward risk‐based (or “impact‐based”) approaches. The UK Met Office's National Severe Weather Warning Service has been a pioneer of this approach, issuing yellow, amber, and red warnings based on...
Monitoring how different people – as ‘social sensors’ – evaluate and respond to crisis such as pandemics, allows tailoring crisis communication to the social perceptions of the situation, at different moments. To gather such evidence, we proposed a index of social perceptions of systemic risk (SPSR), as an indicator of a situational threat compromi...
We undertake a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature to arrive at recommendations for shaping communications about uncertainty in scientific climate-related findings. Climate communications often report on scientific findings that contain different sources of uncertainty. Potential users of these communications are members of the general pu...
Do crisis evolve linearly through sequential one‐directional stages that end with their resolution? Or are crisis, a set of nonlinear events with somewhat a chaotic nature, better represented as multilayer relapse cycles, that is, a series of dynamic processes and templates that evolve at different levels of analysis and can either go forward—achie...
Background
During events that involve health risks, people may feel the need personal and social resources to cope with the demands posed by event. Depending on their individual characteristics, people may perceive their resources as sufficient or as insufficient to face the situation. Risk perception analysis was conducted in Portugal during the C...
With the increased frequency, intensity and duration of extreme weather events potentiated by climate change, a better understanding of social systems’ resilience and adaptation strategies to these has been established as a research priority at the individual and community levels. Because such events have the potential to interfere with individuals...
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are nowadays an interactive means through which humans respond to potentially stressful extreme events (e.g., natural or technological disasters). Despite growing research and reviews on ICTs' role, these often follow an event-specific approach, describing how or what people respond without explaini...

Climate change is driving dramatic environmental changes and posing new demands to citizens, health authorities, and policy makers worldwide. This is due to an increased frequency, intensity, and duration of associated extreme weather events. Recent calls for better understanding of how citizens adapt to such demands and the role that psychologica...
To enable consumers to make informed decisions based on communications about food risks and particularly intake recommendations, it is essential that individuals understand the information presented to them. Thus, research into the way people make sense and understand newly received information is important from a public policy perspective. This is...
Non-adherence to health recommendations (e.g. medical prescriptions) presents potential costs for healthcare, which could be prevented or mitigated. This is often attributed to a person’s rational choice, to not adhere. However, this may also be determined by individual and contextual factors implied in the recommendations communication process. In...
Following the recommendations for healthy eating habits, issued by the competent
authorities, is essential in promoting health in the elderly population. However, little is
known about how older people understand the information communicated and
specifically, the numeric format of recommended quantities. With the goal of
understanding the mental re...
