Chapter
In this chapter, the authors conduct a background review of eventual consistency models in modern distributed data store systems. They present their adaptive and continuous Quorum‐based consistency model for the distributed ONOS controllers in large‐scale deployments. Modern distributed database systems supporting standard eventual consistency mode...
Chapter
The proposed software‐defined networking (SDN) controller placement scheme uses heuristics with low computation time in order to deal with such large‐scale and dynamic network environments where fast reevaluations of controller placement configurations are required to adapt in real‐time to frequently changing network conditions. The potential of su...
Chapter
Current SDN controller platform designs employ conventional strong consistency models so that the SDN applications running on top of the distributed controllers can benefit from strong consistency guarantees for network state updates. This chapter proposes an adaptive multi‐level consistency model for the distributed ONOS controllers following the...
Chapter
This chapter presents a survey on software‐defined networking (SDN) with a special focus on distributed SDN control. It discusses a physical classification of state‐of‐the‐art SDN control plane architectures into centralized and distributed in order to highlight the SDN performance, scalability and reliability challenges. The chapter also presents...
Chapter
This chapter provides a thorough discussion of the major challenges of distributed SDN control, along with some insights into emerging and future trends in this area. These challenges include the issues of scalability, reliability, state consistency, interoperability, monitoring and security. Scalability concerns in SDN may arise from the decouplin...

In the years since its initiation, the software-defined network paradigm has evolved into a distinguished networking technology by causing a revolution in separating the control logic from physical devices and centralizing software-based controllers. Despite its indisputable benefits compared with the traditional network, the SDN raises the challen...

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) brought a groundbreaking idea to facilitate network system management by decoupling and abstracting the Control plane and Data plane of traditional networks. The centralised control offers network administrators many benefits such as a global view of the network, programmability, dynamic updating of forwarding rule...

With the rapid growth of fifth-generation (5G), network operators have met with difficulties in ensuring user satisfaction due to diverse service-level agreement (SLA) requirements. Application-aware routing is able to potentially address this issue in implementing differentiated routing policies corresponding to various applications. To facilitate...

Exposure to contaminated water during aquatic recreational activities can lead to gastrointestinal diseases. In order to decrease the exposure risk, the fecal indicator bacteria Escherichia coli is routinely monitored, which is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and costly. To assist the stakeholders in the daily management of bathing sites, models h...

To control coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), most countries have opted for a containment policy. When a decision of decontainment has to be taken, a question emerges regarding the digital strategy to adopt: Should we track citizens? All of them or only persons who contracted COVID-19? Should we take measures to protect elderly people or people s...

This paper aims to propose a deployment solution for Content-Centric Delivery Networks (C-CDN) based on the SDN technology in an IoT-like environment. To meet today’s network requirements in terms of reliability, scalability and performance and to match the specific IoT needs, the SDN architecture needs to be physically-distributed, but logically-c...

In the coming years, the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) will have relevance for transport, environment, health care, smart cities and also multimedia services (Multi-media Internet of Things (MIoT)). Nowadays, many services including those of the IoT and MIoT encrypt the data to make it secure during the transmission. However, it impos...

Software-defined Network (SDN) is considered as a revolutionary paradigm shift of computer networks in bringing programmable networks and control-data plane separation. Over the last decade, SDN has received a remarkable attention from the networking society. However, much of the previous research is based on Mininet, Maxinet, One and DOT to simula...

In this paper, we propose a new adaptive bit rate (ABR) streaming method. This method is based on estimating and monitoring users' video streaming experience, their quality of experience (QoE). This ensures a good user QoE and optimises bandwidth utilisation by monitoring video buffer fill rate to ensure minimal data traffic. First, we achieve a Qo...

This paper addresses the knowledge dissemination problem in distributed SDN control by proposing an adaptive and continuous consistency model for the distributed SDN controllers in large-scale deployments. We put forward a scalable and intelligent replication strategy following Quorum-replicated consistency: It uses the read and write Quorum parame...

A Content Delivery Network (CDN) is able to handle high traffic and offer reliable services by geographically bringing content data to the edge network, where replica servers are installed closer to end-users. Traditional CDN architecture lacks a global view of the whole network and thus cannot dynamically and optimally perform the server selection...

With the massive uses of the video over the world in the last decade, the user perception, commonly called Quality of Experience (QoE) metric; has become the one of the most important topics for the Network services Providers (NsP) and Content service Providers (CsP). In this paper, we present a new QoE estimation method on the client side using Ma...

As opposed to the decentralized control logic underpinning the devising of the Internet as a complex bundle of box-centric protocols and vertically-integrated solutions, the SDN paradigm advocates the separation of the control logic from hardware and its centralization in software-based controllers. These key tenets offer new opportunities to intro...
