There has been a lot research that talks about the negative aspects of internet usage. Research suggests that excessive internet usage leads to a lack of empathy, inhibition in communication, problems in attention, etc. However, there is a lot of other research that suggests that many people use internet as a medium for expressing themselves. There are many people who are not very comfortable in expressing themselves in face-to-face interactions. For instance, people who feel lonely, people who are shy and have social anxiety, or introverts, feel more comfortable while interacting on the internet. They are able to express themselves in a better way on the internet. In such instances the internet becomes a medium for self-expression, which in turn, helps in improving the mental health of such individuals.
