Introduction
Cognitive loss is one major feature of having dementia that affects various areas of life, especially daily activities. I am interested in how the gradual loss of cognitive functioning affects mental representations and performance of daily activities as well as self-perceived problems and memory awareness throughout the course of dementia. Therefore my research has a focus on healthy brain aging, memory coping strategies, and psychosocial interventions against cognitive decline and dementia.

Background
Living with dementia affects almost every aspect of life. Medical care concepts, however, focus mainly on biological aspects of the disease so that many caregivers have to find solutions themselves for dealing with the other aspects of daily life. Aim of the present study was to identify such solutions.

We conducted a survey with...

Background:
Memory problems are common in advanced age. Memory strategies can be used to manage such challenges. To assist older people facing memory problems, we conducted a pilot study to evaluate the usability of a memory aid handbook that we developed specifically for this purpose.
Method:

Background
Non-pharmacological interventions show promising positive effects on dementia symptoms. Since the majority of dementia care activities are performed by family caregivers, it is important to know how they perceive and implement such approaches. We aimed to investigate the extent to which non-pharmacological interventions are considered by...

Psychosocial factors offer promising possibilities for preventing dementia and slowing its progression. The extent to which psychosocial factors are taken into account in the treatment and care of people with dementia is not well known. The aim of this study was therefore to examine personal experiences and knowledge of psychosocial factors in deme...
The majority of people with dementia (PwD) live in the community. Compared to institutionalised PwD, their access to formalised music therapy is limited. Initial works suggest that non‐therapist‐led music‐based interventions (MBIs) may be an accessible and effective alternative. The aim of this review was, therefore, to synthesise evidence on MBIs...
Objectives:
Dealing with memory loss is a major challenge for older people. Coping strategies for memory problems could enable cognitively impaired people to live independently for longer. We conducted a systematic review to summarize evidence on coping strategies for older people and people with cognitive impairment to stabilize everyday life fun...
Since dementia is a result of cognitive rather than physical impairment, cognitive aspects are important for care planning. This mixed‐model study aims to understand how the loss of cognitive functioning affects mental representations of daily activities.
Mental representations were assessed via the script generation task of daily activities (groce...
Background
It is well known that people with dementia experience severe problems in their daily lives. Less is known about how self‐perceived problems decline throughout the course of dementia together with their decline in memory, language, and executive functions. Hence, we wanted to assess self‐perceived problems when performing daily activities...
Background
Since dementia is a result of cognitive rather than physical impairment, cognitive functioning should also be considered when estimating the care of older people. This study investigated how the loss of cognitive functioning affects mental representations of daily activities and their performance throughout the course of dementia. A mixe...
