Introduction
I am interested in using problem structuring methods to examine our assumptions, promote organizational learning, and support discovery and growth.
To get there, I use systems thinking and explore topics like systems of performance management and whether, how, when, and why it can help humans better navigate the bumpy road into the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Purpose
The strategy map represents a major contribution to the theory and practice of performance management. However, it has failed to realize its full potential due to a lack of theoretical and conceptual development. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to revisit the theories of strategy maps to better understand how and in what circumstanc...
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the implications of adopting a critical realist position for the study of performance measurement and management (PMM) systems.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper discusses recent challenges to knowledge creation in PMM, arguing that overcoming these will require revisiting often implicit philoso...
Complexity, paradox, tension, and contradiction are increasingly seen as permeating all aspects of organizational life. Yet despite ongoing advancement, both our understanding of the nature of complexity and how to use this increased appreciation of it in practice are still developing. In this spirit, this article considers organizational agility a...
Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) holds promise as an effective approach to addressing real-world problem situations. However, new learners of SSM can expect a number of challenges in learning the approach: its ambiguity and complexity, the number of likely unfamiliar concepts, its focus on rational analysis over emotion, and the demanding environment...
Despite significant research on sleep and sleep-related phenomena in organizations, management scholars have remained entrenched along disciplinary lines in their approach, neglecting points of connection which increasingly drive conflict and challenge at work. In this paper, we use a multilevel perspective to integrate what we know about sleep and...
This paper explores the implications of adopting a critical realist approach to soft systems methodology (SSM) both to address local problematic situations and to develop deeper explanations. However, its potential as a means for developing generalizable knowledge for management science has been limited due at least in part to its adherence to stro...
This paper seeks to explore strategic alignment of action and to better understand how it relates to systems of performance measurement and management. The described study uses cognitive mapping within a small, for-profit company in the software industry to analyze how individual processes, strategies and goals relate to the whole. Results from ana...
Soft systems methodology is an approach for addressing complex organizational problem situations that has been used effectively in a wide range of research contexts. This paper explores the implications of adopting a critical realist approach to soft systems methodology both to resolve problematic situations and to develop scientific explanations....
Projects
Project (1)
The aim of this project is to explore the use of soft systems methodology applied to the study of PMM for theory development and practical application for organizations seeking what has been referred to as strategic alignment. In the broader context of the thesis, this project is about how to explain whether, how, and in what circumstances PM can lead to the outcomes sought through its use, even given open, complex systems.
RQ1: How can soft systems methodology be used to uncover and address difficulties, failures, or limits of PMM systems in achieving alignment?
RQ2: What are the implications of applying a critical realist approach to soft systems methodology?
