The goals of the proposed studies are to advance human health by evaluating interventions to minimize the detrimental effects of acute whole body gamma irradiation on bone metabolism, bone architecture and bone reconstruction using a mouse model. Preliminary results suggest that a rapid rate of recovrry of the Hematopoietic system following exposure to high dose radiation is a key factor in limiting bone loss. Therefore the efficiacy of two forms of bone marrow transplantation will be compared for preventing bone loss following high dose whole body gamma irradiation.
