Project
A method is presented to estimate the density of the two main pigments in the human skin, haemoglobin and melanin. Based on intensity differences between color channels from ordinary images, density of each pigment is estimated from a linear combination of the blue and green channels using non-negative least squares (nnls). The weights assigned to each color channel are estimated from the entropies of the images resulting from the decomposition of several samples, each of homogeneous characteristics. The method performs well under moderate changes of color temperature of the image. Further analysis using principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrate that it allows to characterize pigmentation differences between groups of images. As an application, the effect of professionally applied make up on face pigmentation is studied in two samples of images of 34 women, corresponding to the same individuals before and after makeup application. Analysis of the principal modes of variation show that professional makeup homogenizes the appearance of haemoglobin of the individuals with a pattern of increased density around the cheeks (blushing) and reduces variability in melanin distribution across individual faces. Clustering analysis will be performed in the future to characterize groups of similar pigmentation before and after pigmentation and their relation.
