Historically, amphibian parasites have been poorly represented in ecological studies, hence, we know little about their diversity, distribution, and role in biological communities. The helminth fauna of four amphibian species (Dermatonotus muelleri, Leptodactylus vastus, Rhinella diptycha, and Trachycephalus typhonius) from three locations in the s...
Article
Purpose We aimed to describe the helminth fauna associated with two sympatric congeneric treefrogs species (Boana multifasciata and Boana raniceps) from a highland marsh in northeastern Brazil. In addition, we investigate the body size influence on parasitological descriptors in these treefrogs, in which we expected that larger frogs would have gre...
Article
Aim To test the importance of evolutionary and biogeographical processes in shaping the assembly of local frog communities in two adjacent regions (hereafter, coastal and inland regions) with different historical signatures. We asked two main questions: (1) why does the coastal region harbour more frog species than the inland region? and (2) how do...

Understanding how different environmental factors influence species occurrence is a key issue to address the study of natural populations. However, there is a lack of knowledge on how local traits influence the microhabitat use of tropical arboreal lizards. Here, we investigated the microhabitat selection of the poorly known lizard Tropidurus lagun...

Parasites are an important component of the global biomass, having significant roles in several regulatory mechanisms in the ecosystem. Parasitism is one of the most common ecological interactions on the planet. Studies have shown that the helminth fauna of only 8% of amphibian species in Brazil have been studied, and this percentage is lower for t...

The Sete Cidades National Park is located in the Brazilian municipalities of Piracuruca and Brasileira, Piauí state, in a transitional zone between the Caatinga and Cerrado biomes. Studies on its herpetofauna were limited to anuran distribution notes and a snake checklist. Thus, here we present an unpublished species list of anurans from Sete Cidad...

Popular species names have always been based on human relationships with things around them, usually reflecting species' external morphology , behavior or even the habitat they inhabit. In Brazil, the high number of popular names, in many cases for the same species, makes it difficult to comprehensively recognize these names, hampering communicatio...

Cases of poisoning have increased considerably in Brazil, however for state of Piauí only two studies were carried out so far. Here, we investigated, through the notification forms, the epidemiological characteristics of cases of poisoning that occurred during 11 years in a macro-region of Picos, state of Piauí, Northeastern Brazil. Furthermore, we...

The authors studied the influence of three environmental traits on the microhabitat selection of Ameiva ameiva (Linnaeus, 1758), in the Brazilian Pantanal, an environment with a marked effect of seasonality, i.e., alternating periods of flooding and falling dry. microhabitat selection was assessed in the dry season using a Resource selection Functi...

The chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) has been linked to the declines of more than 500 amphibian species globally. In Brazil, Bd has been identified in several regions but predominantly in the Atlantic Forest. Data on the occurrence of this amphibian pathogen in northeastern Brazil are scarce, specifically from the Caatinga ecoregi...

In this study, we describe the diet of Leptodactylus podicipinus in South Pantanal. We analysed the stomach content of 30 individuals collected in September 2017 in the Miranda sub-region, Mato Grosso do Sul. We identified 19 prey categories to Order level, out of which Coleoptera was the most representative group and the most important prey catego...

Although São Paulo state has one of the best known amphibian fauna in Brazil, there are still protected areas for which the species composition remains unknown. Here, we present the first species list of anuran amphibians in Vassununga State Park. This area is one of the last remnants of semideciduous Atlantic Forest and Cerrado in the northeastern...

The geographic distribution of Sphaenorhynchus lacteus comprises Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America, Guianas, eastern Brazil and Trinidad. Herein, we report for the first time the occurrence of Sphaenorhynchus lacteus and of the genus for the state of Piauí.

The genus Physalaemus is widely distributed over South America, east of Andes. Physalaemus cicada belongs to the Physalaemus cuvieri group, is widely distributed over the Caatinga and is usually found in lentic and/or temporary water bodies. Herein, we extend its geographical distribution providing the first record of Physalaemus cicada for Piauí s...

Project
