Inland recreational fishing is primarily considered a leisure-driven activity in freshwaters, yet its harvest can contribute to food systems. Here we estimate that the harvest from inland recreational fishing equates to just over one-tenth of all reported inland fisheries catch globally. The estimated total consumptive use value of inland recreatio...

The Czech Republic has a long tradition of pond production and recreational fisheries. Today, the Czech fisheries sector has two main pillars: (1) production of common carp Cyprinus carpio in semi-extensive pond culture, and (2) rod-based recreational angling of approximately 350,000 people (3 % of Czech population). The production of carp supplies...

The need to assess reasons why households do not want to conserve water or use purified water is critical when facing water scarcity during the climate change crisis. This study aimed to provide an analysis of perceptions of the public in Czechia towards water conservation. A representative questionnaire survey (n = 1824) was conducted in the whole...

Tento manuál vznikl z důvodu potřeby státní správy a samospráv řešit neutěšenou situaci ohledně narůstající intenzity osobní automobilové dopravy, především ve větších městech. Města ucpaná automobily přispívají ke zhoršování stavu životního prostředí a lidského zdraví a také k nižší spokojenosti obyvatel. V rámci plnění dohod EU ohledně klimatický...

Inland recreational fisheries, found in lakes, rivers, and other landlocked waters, are important to livelihoods, nutrition, leisure, and other societal ecosystem services worldwide. Although recreationally-caught fish are frequently harvested and consumed by fishers, their contribution to food and nutrition has not been adequately quantified due t...

Introductions of non-native fishes are among the biggest threats to freshwater ecosystems globally. However, the effects of such introductions on fisheries management and fish yields are understudied. This study is trying to fill this knowledge gap by analyzing relationships between yields of native and non-native fishes with regards to important f...

The crucian carp (Carassius carassius, L.) and the brown trout (Salmo trutta, L.) are vanishing from freshwater ecosystems of central Europe. To conserve both species, tailor-made conservation management of habitats and populations of both species was implemented and tested in the Czech Republic (central Europe). This management was adjusted to ref...

The Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo is a widespread piscivorous waterbird. The competition for resources between recreational anglers and Cormorants has been causing serious conflicts between sport fisheries and environmentalists. This study aimed to compare fish catches by Cormorants and by recreational anglers in the upper Elbe River in Centr...

Inland recreational fisheries provide numerous socio-economic benefits to fishers, families and communities. Recreationally harvested fish are also frequently consumed and may provide affordable and sustainable but undervalued contributions to human nutrition. Quantifying the degree to which recreationally harvested fish contribute to food security...

The size of an ecosystem affects ecological interactions, but less is known about how ecosystem size may affect social interactions. We posit that ecosystem size could serve as a basis for understanding and contextualizing social interactions, connecting how ecosystem size influences natural resource investment decisions and the use of ecosystem se...

Intensive multi-species fish stocking management is a popular yield enhancement tool that supposedly leads to elevated yields in recreational angling. This study aimed to analyze the relationships between fisheries management of an apex predator and its putative prey. The GAM (generalized additive model) was used to analyze the relationships betwee...

The literature on global trends in recreational fishing, the determinants of participation in recreational fishing, and the social embedding of recreational fishing in the public eye are reviewed across the world. Data support a conceptual life-cycle model of fisheries according to which interest in recreational fishing rises rapidly with economic...

In central Europe, both brown trout Salmo trutta and European grayling Thymallus thymallus are threatened native salmonid species with high value in recreational angling and nature conservation. On the other hand, rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis are intensively stocked non‐native species of high angling value...

Background. The European grayling, Thymallus thymallus (Linnaeus, 1758), is a fish species of high value in recreational fishing. The monitoring of changes in grayling populations is a high priority in fisheries. Data on the harvest of recreational anglers can potentially serve as an easy and inexpensive way to monitor changes in fish populations....

In Central Europe, European grayling Thymallus thymallus is an endangered and vanishing fish species with high recreational angling value. For that reason, in January 2016, the minimum legal angling size for grayling was increased from 30 to 40 cm in the Czech Republic. This study evaluated if the increase in minimum angling size had any effect on...

Stocking of hatchery-reared fish into streams is a common practice in fisheries industry as it provides catches for recreational anglers and support for native fish populations. The Eurasian otter Lutra lutra is one of the most important freshwater piscivorous predators in Europe. Impact of otters on stocked fish is a source of conflict between fis...

Question
When submitting a research paper, we as the authors are almost always asked to disclose any conflict of interest. However, I have never seen anyone do it. I wonder if this sentence is just a formality that the editor must put in and the author must declare, or if it matters in some cases. Have you ever seen a paper with a declared conflict of interest?
Question
Do you think that publishers of international scientific journals be paying their reviewers for reviewing scientific papers? If so, what should be the price for one review? Or should there be professional peer-reviewers?
Question
I am looking for a communication manual or strategy that the government (or other institution or organization) uses to communicate with the public and to persuade the public to act. The manual should be describing target groups based on socio-demography, values, beliefs, and other characteristics. It should then specify how to approach each of these target groups.
Question
We are trying to persuade farmers and hunters not to kill wolves, lynxes, bears, otters, and beavers. But we need a financially based argument that these mammals are beneficial for the ecosystem and save money if we keep them alive. Is there any literature that estimates how much money will one wolf/lynx/bear/otter(/beaver save per year?
Question
We are trying to decrease the fear of the public towards large carnivores (bears, wolves, lynxes). We want the people to stop fearing those animals and to perceive them more positively. We are also trying to de-escalate the conflicts between farmers (owners of domesticated animals) and large carnivores. Here, we are mainly looking for ways to contact the public and farmers and communicate the problem with them.
Question
We are trying to create a PR and communication campaign that the government will use to motivate the public (especially old people and people from villages) to replace their old coal stoves that emit high emissions. We want to motivate those people to replace coal stoves with more environmental-friendly technologies such as gas, electricity, geothermal energy systems, solar panels etc. We will do this by asking the people via in-depth interviews and questionnaire surveys. Do you have any experience with successfully persuading people to throw away their old coal stoves?
Question
We want to create a PR and communication campaign that the government will use to motivate the public to use public transport instead of privately owned cars in peoples´ daily lives. We want to persuade undecided people who can use both public transport and cars to use public transport more often, especially when both means of transport are of comparable quality and equally accessible. We will create a questionnaire survey where we will access the perception and behavior of the public towards transport choice. Do you have any suggestions on how could we link it to a communication strategy and campaign that will follow after that?
Question
I need to test if a certain value (e. g. the number of lung cancer patients) has changed over time (e. g. over the last 30 years). I want to observe time trends over the years – when did the numbers increase, when did they decrease, and what is the overall trend over time.
