Why do individuals cooperate? This question represents an evolutionary conundrum because cooperation is vulnerable to exploitation by cheats that no longer pay the cost of cooperation, but still benefit from the cooperative acts performed by others. In my group, we are studying the factors that prevent the evolutionary breakdown of public goods cooperation in microbes. Particularly, we are focussing on the sharing of iron-scavenging siderophore molecules in bacterial communities.
