Project
In this project I wish to undertake a comprehensive research on the beginnings of MLLT in Portugal. In the first of the three pillars of the project, the key questions I wish to obtain answers to are the following: - How and where were the modern foreign languages learned and taught from the 16th to 18th centuries? - How did English, French and German come to be a part of the Portuguese Secondary School syllabi since 1836 (previously to the inclusion of other languages like Spanish in the late 20th century) and how did they eventually gain ground? - How was MLLT affected by later policy changes? - What was the role of grammars or textbooks in MLLT, with or without the statute of official textbooks? - What methods were chosen for historic MLLT textbooks? - In which way can these historic works for MLLT be of use for foreign language teaching in modern days?
Archived project
The purpose of this work is to study three grammar books, produced in Portugal, in the 19th century by Jacob Bensabat, analyzing their parts and concepts, especially concerning pedagogical and teaching method ideas. The Corpus is composed of three Portuguese grammar books that have a very important position in the scope of the Portuguese language grammatization history, particularly for renewing the theory and the examples or to introduce comments on the use of the Portuguese language. The analyzed Grammar books are: Grammatica Inglesa Theorica e Pratica: um curso completo de exercícios, o Inglês sem Mestre em 50 lições, o Francês sem Mestre em 50 lições, o Italiano sem Mestre. I understand the study of Jacob Bensabat´s work as being part of cultural history that is why I intend to observe how they were elaborated, understood and written. In these grammars a comparison of definition, parts and examples will be made. I will consider the concept of grammar, from its most broad sense, as a reference book to learn an L2: that is, of all types of grammars (epistemological, descriptive, normative, universal, general etc.) only those destined to ELT will be the main object of study in this thesis.
Project
This project aims to analyze the evolution of grammatical and linguistic ideas in Portuguese grammars, since the first grammatical Portuguese treatise by Fernão de Oliveira (Lisbon 1536).
