Introduction
I look at the intertwinement of contemporary and future macro-, meso- and micro-developments in an inter-, multi- and trans-disciplinary view. My focus is on global-local transformation, interdisciplinary anticipation, and good governance of “glocal” phenomena. I use foresight, futures literacy and anticipatory innovation governance to facilitate participatory processes and inclusive anticipation. I serve as a speaker and advisor on contemporary affairs and interdisciplinary futures.

This essay provides a concise impression of the many contemporary attempts to revitalize futures thinking. Futures thinking—in the sense of a systematic anticipatory approach based on sound scientific expertise and backed by socio-philosophical reasoning which must carefully balance idealism and pragmatism—was asleep for some time but is now rapidl...
Contemporary brain research is challenging Western societal norms by questioning basic cornerstones such as individuality, freedom, rationality, solidarity, and the concept of the human being in general. It is giving way to profound changes in Western concepts of culture and civilization. This volume provides a broad overview of the cultural change...
This chapter provides a basic introduction to the concepts and practices of neuroscience, neuroculture, and neuroethics. It discusses where they stand, why they are so prominently on the rise, and what their perspectives are.
This chapter provides an introduction to neurophilosophy which is not a well-confined field but often rather the eclectic use of elements of the history of philosophy for the observation and further development of neuroscience and, in particular, neuroethics. This chapter describes its foundations in “post-humanistic” thought with particular regard...
While posthumanism remains a strong influence on the concepts of neuroscience and neuroethics, there is a second major ideology that is impacting the orientation of the field: neurotranshumanism. Contrary to posthumanism, transhumanism aims at using neurotechnology to radically modify the use and concept of the human body and mind in order to progr...
Many observers are convinced that given that neurotechnology is changing the traditional self-image of human beings throughout very different societies, it might ultimately induce a “posthuman” technological self that will be the new normal. This chapter explains what neuroanthropology is and how it is changing our perception of ourselves.
The approach of neurocivics posits the question of whether civic institutions are ready for moral bio-enhancement. This chapter introduces the term and practice of neurocivics and draws the perspectives.
Given that there are new ideological fights around the “right use” of neurotechnology and neuroscience, the divide between idealistic and realistic stances has widened. Sure is that a new neurorealism is needed to find a balance between empiricism and subjectivity, or the outer and the inner dimensions of what is addressed by neuroresearch.
This chapter provides an impression of applications in the field of the so-called “New Human Technologies (NHT).” It addresses Brain–Computer Interfaces (BCIs) and their use and explains what neuroenhancement is and could become.
This chapter presents a conclusion and outlook on the future of neuroscience, neuroculture, and neuroethics. It discusses how these fields and their intersection might evolve and be further developed.
Contemporary neuropolitics opens new frontiers for policy and strategy due to the unprecedented bandwidth of actual and potential applications and directions of development. This chapter describes what neuropolitics is and where it might be going from here.
Neuroeconomics might change the crucial field of economics profoundly over the coming decades. This chapter introduces the term and explains the most important features of the nascent practices related to it.
The rising field of neuroethics is about combining a holistic approach with preparedness and precautions against the misuse of neurotechnologies. This chapter describes what neuroethics is, what it aims to achieve, and why it must be a trans-systemic and international endeavor.
This chapter describes and discusses the most important programs and visions of the field of neuroresearch and neuroscience developed over the past decades. Some have materialized, others have not, and the question is why, and what this means in the outlook.

In Russia's 2022 Ukraine war the role of religion is manifest in the "metaphysical" narratives anchoring (and feeding into) it, and - to that end - in religion's amalgamation with apparently "anticipatory" nationalist-eschatological philosophies. Guinea is an exemplary case of North-South exploitation, as well as of the ambiguities involved on both sides. This is what is shown by the case of its foreign-stored gold reserves and the dubious attempts of Guinea's current military junta to take back control. The solution lies in reforms on both sides.

Roland Benedikter argues that UNESCO's Futures Literacy approach is key to ensuring global policies are appropriate for and taken up by local communities. To this end, for several years UNESCO has developed as one of its centerpieces the "Futures Literacy" approach. Futures Literacy is about the question: How can we overcome the poverty of imaginat...
Chile is the Global South’s “exceptional nation” in terms of wealth and historical development patterns, but most recently it has been aligning with some of the geopolitical area’s traits. Together with the constitutional reform process, the resounding victory of the left under the lead of Gabriel Boric Font (born 1986) in Chile’s December 2021 pre...

Mobile technology is widely used in healthcare. However, designers and developers in many cases have focused on developing solutions that are often tailored to highly literate people. The lasting impact of Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine could be contrary to what the Russian President intended, writes Roland Benedikter. The Russia-Ukraine war could ultimately serve as a demonstration of how authoritarian regimes can sow the seeds of their own downfall.
Half a year after the 2021 coup in Guinea, the military junta has attempted to control the National Bank's foreign-stored gold reserves. Re-globalization is a relatively new term. It intends to frame and characterize the most recent phase of globalization: the phase we are currently in. Although the term is not undisputed, in every respect still in the making and must be contextualized according to different environments, it serves as a connecting bond between a variety of phenomena...
All this eventually brings us, in conclusion, to the complex, never-ending and in re-globalization times more than ever enduring topic of religion and critique. This includes the even bigger question mark behind the interface between religion and irony. The views on and practices at this interface vary particularly strongly between open and closed,...
Juergen Habermas, a German forethinker of European and global democracy, has recently surprised many with his reaction to the symptoms of re-globalization. Trying to save the openness of Western open societies while at the same time strengthening the sense of unity, civic solidarity and civil commitment through the revival of a secular idealism mea...
When it comes to civil religion as one important “social kit” of globalized societies, paradoxa between the two pillars of global democracy—both sides of the Atlantic—abound. For example, a paradoxical difference between Europe and the United States is that Europe has no comparable unifying civil religion, i.e., no common public rational sphere and...
Although some of the inherent consequences of these projections may be disputed, as illustrated by a supposed decreasing influence of non-believers on global politics, the general view is sustained by the world’s demographic development projection for the coming years.
The dispute is about where all these trends eventually point to. Where may they ultimately lead in regard to the coming years? And how can they be steered in a productive direction?
If Islam today is a growing demographic, cultural and political force on the international stage, other religions have noticed this and have responded with a stronger politicization partly accompanied by a growing Anti-Islamist stance. This does not mean that the re-politicization trend in global politics is just a reaction to the growth of Islam....
Where does religion stand in the present? And what are its perspectives? Are there trends which point to substantial transformation—while others do not, rather reaffirming and reviving traditional concepts and practices? Are traditional and post-traditional, formal and post-formal trajectories reconcilable, particularly if they are undertaken simul...
An eighth trend is the apparent—although often still “weak” but widespread—liberalization process within some of the politically and socially most authoritarian and strict religious societies.
Together, and in their (widely unsystematic) interplay, the twenty-one trends seem to be currently contributing to both redefine the traditional self-concept of “religion” as practiced in post-neoliberal globalization, and to refine crucial approaches of contextual politics which, not least because of these trends, are increasingly becoming an impo...
In June 2020, UN Secretary-General António Guterres eloquently illustrated the main aspects of the era of re-globalization in his speech on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (charter signed on June 26, 1945, formal coming into existence October of the same year).
Interestingly, such a broad spectrum of re-globalization phenomena widely coincides with an allegedly fundamental turn within the mainstream mindset (if there is such a thing) in Western open societies. This turn is connected with an increasing sense of “uncontrollability of the world.” It seems to be underway, with increasing insistence, since the...
With these aspects, we have laid a primordial basis to map the present situation of religion. What we also have to observe, at least in precautionary manners, is that in times of the new trinity of re-globalization, post-postmodernity and meta-modernity, contradictions are often inbuilt in one and the same phenomenon.
With a lot of contemporary debate centered on the differences and affinities between church religions and so-called “citizen spirituality,” the latter including “alternative spiritualities” and the heritage of “postmodern spirituality,” organized historical groups such as Freemasonry or Rosicrucianism are often neglected.
The list of examples of both trends, toward more explicit and implicit forms of contemporary religion, is endless, and as such is a characteristic of the ambivalence of re-globalization as a potential historical epoque. The rise of political (in the above mentioned case Islamistic and anti-Islamic) factions are a driving force in world politics, im...
Two further factors will influence the future of religion: switching and migration.

Since "Resilient Society" requires a particularly strong focus on inter- and multi-disciplinarity, studies seem to be still relatively scarse. Which works are you aware of, also with regard to sectorial research or particular and partial issues, that should in any case be included into a new, encompassing overview over the topic for the present and future?
There are some outside models such as the Australian or the Canadian one, and a variety of proposals of how to best adapt them to the EU context (i.e. the current European refugee and migration crisis) - but where are the specifically European ideas not just focusing on integration, which would be the second or third step in dealing with the challenge, but on the first logical step: (integrated) migration policy? Do you know of any concrete proposal catalogues stemming from and/or for any level of multi-level governance in the EU?
