The shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiver-sity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxo-nomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impedi...

The urge to organise the world around us is an essential part of human nature. Naming and categorising enable us to store and access information ef ciently. The need to name and categorise extends to the natural world and, in particular, to living organisms. The science underpinning this area of knowledge is called Taxonomy, and is as old as humani...
Tarciso de Sousa Filgueiras was born in Goiânia, in the state of Goiás, in the heart of the Brazilian cerrado. His interest in plants manifested itself when he was still a boy when, encountering broken bush branches, he improvised ‘slings’ to treat them. As he told his mother, he wanted to be a ‘plant doctor’.
Dr Filgueiras studied agricultural eng...
Isachne burchellii, an endemic new species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, is here recognized as distinct from Isachne goiasensis based on macro and micromorphological characters, geographic distribution and ecological evidence. This new species is illustrated and its taxonomic and morphological affinities with I. goiasensis are discussed.
The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) was established by the Conference of Parties in 2002 to decrease the loss of plant diversity, reduce poverty and contribute to sustainable development. To achieve this overarching goal, the GSPC has established a series of targets, one of which is to ensure that plant diversity is well understood, s...
The Teaching Internship (TI) is understood as a curricular component that promotes the interrelation between theory and pedagogical practice, capable of bringing the graduate student closer to the educational activities. In this context, the objectives of this study were: 1) to evaluate students' perception about the contributions of the TI model o...

With 94 species, Poaceae is one of the largest botanical families of the Upper Paraná River Floodplain (PIAP) and its environs, located between 22º38'-22º57'S and 53º5'-53º36'W, and covering areas of the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná. Seasonally flooded, PIAP is part of the The Environmental Protection Area of the Islands and fl...
Isachne soderstromii, a new species from Dominica in the Lesser Antilles, is described and illustrated. The new species can be recognized by the combination of the following features: distichous leaves, blades with conspicuous midrib, panicle branches and pedicels with glandular bands, and glabrous rachilla between the lower and the upper similar a...
While performing a taxonomic revision of the Neotropical species of Isachne, analysis of herbarium collections revealed the occurrence of Isachne ligulata in Brazil. We provide a description and the first illustration of I. ligulata, along with comments on its ecology, distribution and morphological affinities with related South American species. W...
This study aims to characterize the grass flora of the Upper Paraná River Floodplain (PIAP) and its environs, located at 22º38'-22º57'S and 53º05'-53º36'W, between the States of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. We analyzed 916 botanical collections obtained from herbaria and fieldwork from 1988 to 2015. The occurrence of 50 genera and 94 species was...
We designate a lectotype for Panicum salzmannii, the basionym of Isachne salzmannii, a rare member of the grass subfamily Micrairoideae, endemic from Southern Bahia, Brazil.
An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country’s biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, sh...
The grass Agrostis lenis Roseng., Arrill. & Izag., a presumably extinct species in São Paulo state, was recollected in that state after a gap of 89 years. This species is considered rare and threatened in São Paulo. Notes on its distribution in Southeastern Brazil, images and a short description are given.
The present study aimed to survey the species of Paniceae s.l. in the Reserva Biológica de Mogi-Guaçu (RBMG‑SP), located between 22°11'-18'S and 47°7'-10'W, in order to increase the knowledge of the grass flora of this conservation unit and of São Paulo State. The field trips were conducted between 2011 and 2012, comprising 11 expeditions. Specimen...
Two species of Poaceae (Eriochloa distachya and Parodiophyllochloa penicillata) are newly reported for the state of São Paulo, Brazil. This paper includes descriptions, illustrations, and comments on the distribution and conservation statuses of these taxa in São Paulo.
Recent analysis of herbarium collections of Hymenachne pernambucensis revealed that the species was erroneously classified as "presumably extinct" in São Paulo State. It is suggested that the conservation status of this taxon should be reevaluated in order to reflect the contemporary knowledge about the conservation status of the species.
Poaceae is one of the largest botanical families because of its ecological and economic importance as well as its species diversity. In Brazil there occurs about 1.419 of the 10.000-11.000 known species in the world. Five hundred grass species are known in the state of São Paulo. These species are found in all the biomes. Panicoideae is one of the...
The name Ocellochloa soderstromii is validated and Ocellochloa gardneri is proposed to replace the illegitimate name Ocellochloa piauiensis.
