The Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) bases the instruction of English in Chile in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFRL), however its guidelines have not been systematically considered in the practice of creating instructional material in the EFL context of this country. To analyze this issue...
Applied linguistics courses are normally part of the undergraduate and postgraduate
curricula to train foreign language teachers around the world (Abreu, 2015) and quite
often discourse analysis (DA) is one of the subjects that pre-service or in-service
teachers must undertake. According to Bhatia, Flowerdew and Jones (2008), DA

Although it can be argued that the language of the internet is English, the portrayal of other languages in virtual academic settings such as university websites may face constraints related to institutional and monolingual policies. Thus, this research adopts a linguistic landscape perspective to explore the representation of the Spanish language...
Within the study of multilingualism, research using the lens of “linguistic landscapes” (LL) has caught the attention of sociolinguists by describing the make-up of urban centers and shedding light on issues of social justice and linguistic harmony. The current study aimed to determine if the language used in the public domain in the university con...
Second language teacher education (SLTE), particularly teaching English as a foreign language (EFL), has gained relevance over the last few decades. However, SLTE practices are unquestionably embedded in linguistic and pedagogical beliefs about what this instruction should look like. To explore this issue, the current mixed methods study aimed at r...
Abstract

This study was carried out in three teacher education programmes in Argentina, Colombia, and Ecuador during two consecutive academic years (2019-2020, 2020-2021), and it sought to explore teacher educa...
This book sheds light on the array of transformative literacies in the Global South, which English language teachers and educators seek to integrate within their pedagogical practices.
In English language teaching (ELT), there is an increasing need for a shift away from dominant literacy thinking, knowledge and practices that originate in the Globa...
The current language policy in Chile aims to develop bilingualism in English and Spanish. However, these aims are highly contested as policy and related curriculum directions are based on English-only monolingual ideologies with little room for translanguaging. To begin with, this chapter introduces language-in-education policies and relevant Teach...
This pedagogical article problematizes the learning and teaching of (applied) linguistics and proposes some activities to teach this field from the practice of English teaching. Often, courses in linguistics are too theoretical or too oriented to delivering academic content via lecturing. Nevertheless, research suggests that trainee teachers in sec...
Research suggests that young learners have remarkable abilities to learn a second language in a natural way; however,
educational institutions around the world have not systematized the learning-teaching process of foreign languages for young
learners, and this is also the case of bilingual education in Chile. This paper shows the rationale for dev...
English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher training programs have historically included applied linguistics subjects and particularly Second Language Acquisition (SLA) courses in their curricula (Abreu, 2015) with the belief that these courses will be a contribution to good language teacher education (Tang, 2008). However, despite the fact EFL and...
Classroom interactions play a key role in the learning and teaching process of a foreign language. On the past years, these interactions have been widely studied, but only few investigations have been developed in the EFL context. This research project focuses on the discursive patterns found in the English lessons of the 5th grade of a private sch...
