Urgent calls to transform societies toward more sustainability make the practice of anticipation more and more necessary. The progressive development of computational technologies has opened room for a growing use of quantitative methods to explore the future of social-ecological systems, in addition to qualitative methods. This warrants investigat...

Abstract The first wave of the COVID- 19 pandemic crisis introduced a sudden discontinuity into the functioning of human societies worldwide by affecting individual habits as well as economic and social life. This paper is a first attempt to investigate whether that discontinuity also altered our relationship to the future, in particular through th...
The Sahel faces significant challenges in terms of food security and climate resilience. Agricultural innovations are crucial to address these challenges, yet for many, ensuring they are sustained over time and deployed on a larger scale is proving difficult. A framework developed by DISSEM-INN highlights key factors to address these issues of inno...

The innovation approach specific to these projects-called DeSI (Development Smart Innovation)-is characterised by three common principles: a multi-stakeholder approach that is co-constructed and multidimensional. The third principle, multidimensionality, indicates that the projects innovate not only on the technical level, but also on the organisat...
One of iconic Africa's Big Five, the African buffalo is the largest African bovine or antelope that occurs throughout most of sub-Sahara and in a wide range of ecosystems from savanna to rainforest. The African buffalo is also one of the most successful large African mammals in terms of abundance and biomass. This species thus represents a powerful...

In southern Africa, residents of Transfrontier Conservation Areas practice small-scale farming in semi-arid environments constrained by the presence of protected areas and extensive wildlife/livestock/human interfaces that come with conflicts and opportunities. Under these contexts, livestock production aims at supporting local livelihoods despite...
Africa has managed to conserve an exceptional mammal diversity but is also facing an increasing demand for agricultural land to address a booming human population. Conserving natural resources while producing food in natural landscapes is a challenge that requires ecosystem health and social-ecological systems thinking.

The nature of the relationship between the European Union (EU) and Africa is in permanent evolution. Historically, the EU mostly dominated the relationship while Africa developed adaptive/reactive strategies. With the establishment of new powers as well as efforts to decolonise the thought and practise of North-South interactions, it is crucial to...

In a context where 200 million more people are expected to live in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) alone by 2050, the question of the futures of SSA rural migration is of crucial importance in a region which so far as remained essentially rural, in spite of a growing urbanization process. The first aim of this paper is to undertake a comprehensive review...
Sub-Saharan Africa has a long history of internal and international migratory movements. Migration patterns and dynamics from, to and between rural areas are profoundly differentiated across regions, and flows have considerably evolved over time. Yet, more recently, rural migration takes place in the unique situation of a major rural and urban demo...

The complexity of the drivers of rural migration in SSA makes it impossible to predict how many people will migrate, why, who they will be, or where they will go. Yet, it is possible to explore how this complex system of interdependent forces could evolve, and to engage in proactive decisions and actions. SSA rural migrants are unlikely to be in a...
The link between climate change and rural migration is complex. Several entangled, often self-reinforcing factors are at play. The combination of climatic events and other natural, social, political and economic factors affect populations living in already vulnerable and fragile environments. Understanding how climate change interacts with other mi...
