Introduction
Professor of Science and Health Science at South University, Columbia, SC campus.
My background is broad having worked on many types of invertebrates, and more recently I have focused on microbiology and environmental health.
Current projects include studying bacterial transmission on fomites, endospore ecology, spider web bacteria, geriatrics, and microbiomes.

Bisphenol A is an organic compound utilized in the manufacture of plastics and resins that gained attention due to its environmental distribution and endocrine disrupting effects. Currently, bisphenol A is listed as toxic in most countries, it persists in waters, soils, and air around the world, hence the need for well-established methods for its d...
In the COVID-19 pandemic context, numerous concerns have been raised regarding the hygienic status of certain objects we interact with on a daily basis, and especially cash money and their potential to harbor and transmit pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, in the present study, we analyzed different currency bills represented by British pounds (5£, 10...
The link between different plastic waste pollutants and their impact on the natural aquatic environment and food chain remains a constant and growing issue. Bisphenol A (BPA), a known endocrine disruptor produced in large quantities primarily in the industry of polycarbonate plastics, can accumulate in vegetal and animal tissue, thus magnifying thr...
Many individuals are wearing face masks improperly at ‘half mask’ and potentially breathing out microbes that can contaminate the air as well as anything below the nose. This note provides the first report that bacteria and fungi breathed out during nasal air exhalation are able to be cultured after landing on blood agar plates. The CFU’s are highe...
Abstract (please click on the link https://www.preprints.org/manuscript/202008.0663/v1 to access the paper): Many individuals are wearing face masks improperly at ‘half mask’ and potentially breathing out microbes that can contaminate the air as well as anything below the nose. My recent privilege to join the South Carolina Board of Nursing (BON) as a member of the public has been an eye-opening experience.....
Aging, geriatrics, gerontology, and related areas are important areas of research as the population of older people increases in relationship to the total population. Researchers in these fields would benefit from guidance regarding sources for publishing and finding relevant scholarly journals and articles. Multiple database sites of journals were...
Book Reviews: Does it Fart? The Definitive Field Guide to Animal Flatulence. By Dani Rabaiotti and Nick Caruso. Hachette Books, 2018. Published in American Biology Teacher, Vol. 81 (1): 58. This book review may be read at: http://www.nabtjournal.com/nabtjournal/january_2019?pg=62#pg62
The public in southern coastal South Carolina provided specimens of what they thought were brown recluse spiders (Loxosceles reclusa). None of the spiders were brown recluses confirming the absence of brown recluses in South Carolina despite the perception of bites from these spiders.
Mosquito vectors may move as infected adults in vehicles as well as by wind, making the spread of diseases such as ZIKAV more likely than currently thought.
A brief history of the term endospore and variety of spores is presented. PubMed searches for ’endospore’ miss many publications on endospores because researchers fail to use the term. Searches for ’spores’ and ’bacterial spores’ also miss many of the papers. Google search data show that ’endospore’ and ’endospore staining’ are primarily searched i...
Paper currency is a major fomite, passing through many hands daily. Sampling has used swabs, but a direct press onto agar plates provides better results. A press of 1/4 of the bill adequately samples the flora. Staphylococcus can survive for at least 26 day while E. coli dies in 24 hours. Antibiotic resistance can be monitored and MDR Staph forms h...
A poster analysis of google search data for ’UTI Elderly,’ ’UTI delirium,’ ’UTI falls,’ and UTI falls in elderly’ and assessing the web sites against evidence based information found in research articles in PubMed searches.
Terrific Tarantulas is an educational note for teachers and amateurs about keeping tarantulas, their biology, and using them in education. It is part of the 'Carolina Tips' series published by Carolina Biological Supply Company.
There are different methods to monitor the health of the community and the movement of pathogens. As a project in Microbiology Laboratory classes we have had students bring in dollar bills (paper currency) and had them expose one quarter of the bill to a plate of Nutrient Agar, another quarter to Mannitol Salt Agar, and a third to Eosin Methylene B...
While studying the capabilities of biosurveillance using paper currency as a fomite carrier of pathogenic bacteria we encountered a highly different flora from dollar bills collected in a beach community. These samples were almost entirely Bacillus colonies. Samples of sand from beaches, dunes and inland sandhills have all revealed large numbers of...

In our Microbiology Laboratory classes we have had students bring in dollar bills (paper currency) and had them expose one quarter of the bill to a plate of Nutrient Agar, another quarter to Mannitol Salt Agar, and a third to Eosin Methylene Blue Agar....
Staphylococcus aureus is part of natural biota of humans and other mammals, establishing itself on the skin, eyes, and mucus membranes. S.aureus can cause infections of the skin, deeper soft tissue and food poisoning through the release of exotoxins. This gram-positive cocci is a non-spore forming, non-motile, and catalase-positive bacteria. By hav...
Our laboratory classes have sampled the bacteria from paper currency (dollar bills) for several years as a means to study an environmental fomite often considered a source of pathogens and disease. A literature search revealed very few papers on the microbial contamination of paper currency in the United States and a greater number from African cou...
The spread of bacteria in communities has been and still is a major public health concern. Escherichia coli 0157:H7, a possible nosocomial pathogen can persist on inanimate objects for weeks or even months, causing server illnesses including bloody diarrhea and haemolytic uremic syndrome. Each year it is estimated that more than 2.2 million lives a...

Integumentary convolutions of posterior segments in Tubifex tubifex serve to increase the available surface area for respiratory exchange of gases. When comparing the anterior and posterior regions of the same worm, there is at least a three-fold increase of surface area in the latter. The convoluted area is dominated by a complex network of furrow...
The three described species of Tengella Dahl1901, family Tengellidae(?), are reviewed . Tengella perfuga Dahl1901 is known only from the original description . The maleof T. albolineata (Pickard - Cambridge,1902) is redescribed . The male of T. radiata (Kulczynski, 1909) is described, with a redescription of the female .
