High-power impulse magnetron-sputtering thick metal/carbon–nitride-doped metal-matrix multilayer nano-composite coating can be applied to cutting-tool holder components to improve cutting insert’s life. One of the challenges of such an add-on solution is the poor adhesion between the thick coating and the hard alloy substrate, such as WC-Co shim. T...

Hardness measurement is a vital step for quality assurance in manufacturing of a wide range of products. Today, the standard hardness measurement tests, such as Vickers, are based on microscope image-based evaluation methods. Since these methods are limited to the geometry of the indentation in 2D images, their precision are highly dependent on the...
Controlling friction and wear are essential for reducing energy loss and lengthening the life span of friction pairs in sliding contacts. Surface texturing is an effective and efficient way to reduce friction and wear, especially under lubricated conditions. Dimple texture on friction pair surfaces has been verified to enhance the lubrication condi...
Barkhausen noise testing (BNT) is a nondestructive method for investigating many properties of ferromagnetic materials. The most common application is the monitoring of grinding burns caused by introducing locally high temperatures while grinding. Other features, such as microstructure, residual stress changes, hardening depth, and so forth, can be...
The use of artificial neural networks for modelling and inference about surface parameters is a more and more often undertaken research topic. Based on the analysis of the ranges of suitability of surface topography parameters, a variety of different parameters can be observed to identify surfaces with different features and different conditions of...
Non-destructive testing of layer properties in machine part loading, has greatly improved over the last 20 years. One of those NDT methods is Barkhausen Noise Analysis (BNA). The BNA-method is utilized to assess changes in the surface layer of ferromagnetic materials, especially for monitoring changes in hardness and residual stresses. The BNA-meth...
Polymer composites are composed of different materials that have been found to affect the different functional properties of the obtained products. One of the most interesting example in this field is wood-polymer composites (WPC), where the solid phase is composed of different origins and wood flour. Regardless of the dimensions of wood particles,...
Background
Termination of fixed orthodontic treatment is associated with bracket debonding and residual adhesive removal. These procedures increase enamel roughness to a degree that should depend on the tool used. Enamel roughening may be associated with bacterial retention and staining. However, a very limited data exists on the alteration of 3D e...
prezentacja - problemy oceny i klasyfikacji topografii powierzchni
After orthodontic treatment, brackets are debonded and residual adhesive is removed, causing iatrogenic enamel damage. The aim of this study was to review the methods of orthodontic adhesive removal, find clear evidence, and provide a rationale for this procedure.
A literature search was performed in PubMed, Dentistry and Oral Sciences, Scopus, Coc...

The article presents a comprehensive system to modeling and evaluation of technical surfaces topography allowing for cheap and full assessment of the geometric structure of the surface. The system consists of a large number (over 200) scripts, functions and applications, also with the graphical user interface (GUI). The system was developed using M...
In the paper a methodology of neural modelling of grinding process using process simulation data was presented. Grinding process simulation parameters were chosen based on the results of the experiment. The experiment consisted of an analysis of the influence of processing parameters (allowance ae, table feed speed vft and table axial feed fa) on t...
Accuracy of measurement data registration considerably influences on values of surface topography parameters. Obtaining high precision and therefore correct mapping of the evaluated surface is of great importance not only in case of determining surface roughness parameters but also its features, essential because of service reasons. The hereby work...
Grinding is one of the basic precise material removal methods. Abrasive and shape wear, as well as smearing of the tools' active surface handicap the processing results. The loss of cutting capacity in abrasive tools or alteration of their shape influences the surface quality and precision of the workpiece dimensions and its shape. Evaluation of th...

Residual stresses influence, among other parameters, on the performance characteristics of the machine, such as deformation, static and dynamic strength, material usage, or the strength of the contact. Extensional stresses as a result of abrasive machining reduce the fatigue strength for the dynamically loaded machine parts. It is preferred when th...
One of the most important procedures in modern surface metrology is digital filtering. It is realized by many filters which are complicated mathematical tools for analysis of a wide variety of surface characteristics. In practice, filters are used among others for denoising, correcting the data obtained from measuring tools and displaying important...
Nowadays, plastics have become one of the most demanded materials, replacing the traditional ones such as metals. Therefore, many companies are concerned with the production of plastics, with their distribution and innovation development. Plastics have found utility in a wide range of applications, we use them every day. Measurement of surface roug...
Szlifowanie jest jednym z najczęściej stosowanych procesów obróbki dokładnej. Proces usuwania materiału następuje w wyniku oddziaływań wielu ziaren ściernych o zróżnicowanym rozmiarze i kształcie. Parametry kinematyczne oraz cechy geometryczne kontaktu ziarna i materiału obrabianego wpływają na efektywność oraz cechy energetyczne procesu [10]. W ty...
Analysis of the geometric features and determination of the condition of the surfaces machined during an abrasive process is of crucial importance for evaluation of their wear properties. Numerous parameters can be used for assessing topography of technical surfaces. Many of them contain information that is general or poorly correlated with the wea...
Grinding is one of the basic precise machining methods. Evaluation of the abrasive tool surface is the basic criterion of forecasting the tools' durability and the process results. The applied method of laser scanning made determination of the surface coordinates and subsequently of its geometric features with micrometric accuracy possible. Using t...
This paper presents and discusses the proposed use of the Talysurf CLI 2000 system for performing high-accuracy measurements of the surface topography of abrasive tools. Specifically, the paper presents a brief description of the Talysurf CLI 2000 system (Fig. 1), as well as one of its modes of use, involving the chromatic aberration phenomenon. Th...
In modern industry it is often required to improve the cleanliness and finish quality of surfaces of precise manufacturing parts. For this purpose, producers apply microfinishing [1], which permits to obtain the better quality than that obtained by different conventional finishing processes. This influences significantly the maintenance of proper o...

The goal is to have "control" over the coefficient of friction, thanks to the special surface preparation. Introducing a specific structure of indentations on a surface with different shapes and distribution affects inter alia:
- Lower friction and lower surface wear, therefore longer component life
- Wear particle trapping into dimples (reduce 3rd body abrasion)
- Hydrodynamic lift,
- Supplying additional lubricant inside the contact
- Decreasing contact areas and increasing pressure
- Enhanced adhesion (for coatings)
- Improved stress isolation and no micro-cracking,
- Lower self-vibration effect caused by starving lubrication, etc.
