I am focused to the support the collaborative, game-based exploration of environmental management challenges, currently regarding salt intrusion. This research has a design focus (human centred design and interaction design), connecting the fields of human computer interaction, serious gaming and environmental modelling. Based on tangible interaction, I create games that have a low-threshold to participate (e.g. a board game) in connection to sophisticated computer models from practice.

SALTISolutions is a multi-disciplinary NWO TTW-funded Perspective Program that researchers salt intrusion, which threatens freshwater availability in estuaries and deltas globally. The research addresses a variety of topics, including but not limited to salt intrusion dynamics, mitigation strategies, nature-based solutions, governance structures, and the development of the Virtual Delta, a digital twin of a real Delta, as a management and design instrument for salt intrusion related questions in deltas worldwide.
RiverCare (http://www.ncr-web.org/rivercare/about) is a Dutch research program. 21 researchers at 5 universities collaborate with knowledge institutes, consultancies and government organizations. RiverCare aims at better understanding the fundamental processes that drive eco-morphological changes in rivers, predict the intermediate and long-term developments. We use that knowledge to improve river governance, reduce maintenance costs and increase benefits of river interventions. We want to put our knowledge into practice not only in the Netherlands but also abroad.
