Subtribe Spiranthinae is the most species-rich lineage of terrestrial Neotropical orchids, encompassing > 500 species and 40 genera. We conducted maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data of plastid matK-trnK and trnL-trnF and nuclear ribosomal ITS sequences for 36 genera and 182 species of Spiranthinae plu...

To THE SOUTHEAST of Cartago and Paraiso, in Costa Rica, there is a rather primitive road through Gwibata to Cach!o It is better to go up the road through Gwibata, as it is much less frightening than the road from Cachi to Alto de Araya. Near the highest point of the road (Alto de Araya) there is a small lake that is said to be quite deep, and there...

Two new species of Sobralia from Costa Rica are described and illustrated, and their affinities are discussed. Sobralia danjanzenii is compared to S. virginalis, from which it is mainly distinct by the simple stems and the unscented flowers, with the lip blotched with yellow only within the throat. Sobralia zebrina is similar to S. macrophylla, but...

Warczewiczella Rchb.f. is distributed in the Neotropical region and it comprises 11 species. A taxonomic and morphologic study of the genera in Colombia is presented. The techniques used correspond to the classic vegetal taxonomy. This genus is characterized mainly because of its fan-shaped leaves, uniflora inflorescence, conspicuous and eye-catchi...

The long-petaled slipper orchid of Central American has a complex nomenclatural history. Since the first publication of the name Cypripedium humboldtii, this plant has been treated under a number of different synonyms. Here we reconsider the oldest name, suggesting that Warszewicz validly published it, and that the name Phragmipedium humboldtii mus...

Laeliinae are a neotropical orchid subtribe with approx. 1500 species in 50 genera. In this study, an attempt is made to assess generic alliances based on molecular phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequence data. Six DNA datasets were gathered: plastid trnL intron, trnL-F spacer, matK gene and trnK introns upstream and dowstream from matK and nuclear I...

In the 1980s, careful estimates of the size of the Orchidaceae clustered around 19,000. A new provisional checklist suggests 24,500 species of orchids, approaching the "improbable maximum of 25,000," as seen by John Atwood. Recent lists from Mesoamerica agree closely with the 20% increase indicated by the provisional list. Will the next two decades...
