Decolonisation has become an increasingly emergent framework in tracing and addressing the complex colonial dynamics of knowledge and power. Yet, there is a considerable risk of decolonisation becoming an academic “buzzword”, as the complex legacies of colonialism are often left unreflected within Eurocentric epistemological conceptualisations.
In trying to sketch out how empirical research projects are often entangled in (re)producing hegemonic discourse, the following questions have been in my mind for a long time:
- What are the challenges of decolonising Eurocentric knowledge production?
- How can we overcome the inherent ambivalences and ambiguities of decolonisation processes in the face of a vast range of epistemic violence?
- Which possibilities of epistemic disobedience do you come across in challenging coloniality of knowledge?

In the last couple of months, I have been overwhelmed trying to cope up with all ethical and methodological challenges. Some stories have been quite intense for me and challenge my own vulnerability due to shared experiences with my research partners living at the crossroads (mostly on the intersection of ,Race’, disability, gender and class…).
I truly believe that the following questions are very important ethical and methodological issues in general. Yet, these issues might affect my research findings in particular.
➜ How can we manage ethical issues as researchers coming from marginalized communities?
➜ How to deal with our own vulnerabilities throughout the research process and how to reflect on our experiences of racism, ableism, (hetero)sexism and other interlocking systems of oppression when we are engaged with these topics in our research projects?
➜ How can we continuously reflect on the issues of social desirability, biased responses as well as misinterpretation of research findings due to shared experiences of intersectional discrimination?
➜ How to critically address strategic essentialism in analyzing research outputs?
I am aware of the common strategies and guidelines in dealing with these issues in qualitative research, so I am more interested in your personal experiences with such challenging topics in your research.

COVID-19 has emphasized the colonial continuity of huge power imbalances between the Global South and Global North. Not surprisingly, Eurocentric discourses that are embedded in Epistemic Violence, reproducing western domination and subjugation of colonial subjects neglect the crucial interconnections between colonialism and global inequality in the time of COVID-19. The longstanding postcolonial power dynamics contribute to the continuity of social injustice and the colonial legacies on the idea of human hierarchy, which can currently be observed in the existing unequal access to and equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines for the Global South.This highlights the ongoing Necropower that has been discussed in relation to Achille Mbembe’s theory of sovereignty as Necropolitics.
Would you agree, there is a connection between unequal distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to the Global South and the colonial idea of human hierarchy: some human lives are worth less than others?

Have you ever worked with the concept of Decolonial Intersectionality (Salem, 2014; Kurtiş & Adams, 2016; Mollett, 2017)? Do you happen to know other scholars who sought to explore the relationship between black feminist approaches like Intersectionality and decolonize and postcolonial perspectives? I do indeed believe that Decolonial Intersectionality could be developed into a fruitful concept that analyzes the interlocking forms of oppression as well as structural discrimination and intersectional disparities in the postcolonial era that are embedded in epistemic violence and heteronormative structures (for e.g. racialized, ableist, cis-normative and colonial assumptions) leading to various forms of social injustice and social exclusion of many marginalized groups.
I would be glad to hear your critical thoughts and to get some literature suggestions as I am currently working on this complex topic for my PhD research project.
