Departing from a qualitative linguistic analysis based on corpus-attested examples, this paper provides a computational treatment of several construction-types, namely, argument-structure constructions, implicational constructions, and illocutionary constructions. Thus, our aim is to offer a formalized representation of constructions of varied natu...

Within the framework of FUNK Lab – a virtual laboratory for natural language processing inspired on a functionally-oriented linguistic theory like Role and Reference Grammar-, a number of computational resources have been built dealing with different aspects of language and with an application in different scientific domains, i.e. terminology, lexi...
Article
Several grammatical models have shown a growing interest for the development of the conditions necessary to satisfy the so-called criterion of computational adequacy. Within Role and Reference Grammar (RRG [Van Valin & LaPolla, 1997; Van Valin, 2005; Pavey, 2010]), there have been some works seeking to implement the model in different computational...

One of the leading motivations behind the multilingual semantic web is to make resources accessible digitally in an online global multilingual context. Consequently, it is fundamental for knowledge bases to find a way to manage multilingualism and thus be equipped with those procedures for its conceptual modelling. In this context, the goal of this...

FunGramKB is a multipurpose lexico-conceptual knowledge base for natural language processing systems, and more particularly, for natural language understanding. The linguistic layer of this knowledge-engineering project is grounded in compatible aspects of two linguistic accounts, namely, Role and Reference Grammar (RRG) and the Lexical Constructio...

The aim of this paper is to discuss the repercussions of a conceptual orientation on two crucial parts of the Role and Reference Grammar (RRG) linking algorithm, that is, semantic representation and constructional schemas. Firstly, it is argued that adopting FunGramKB’s notion of conceptual logical structure (CLS) over standard RRG logical structur...

Recent research into FunGramKB has focused on the development of a proof-of-concept prototype, ARTEMIS, which is able to automatically provide a semantic representation of a text under the format of a conceptual logical structure. This research is based on previous work, which has explored the methodological repercussions of viewing the RRG linking...

This paper provides an analysis of English middle structures within the framework of the Lexical Constructional Model (LCM), which proposes a central module, the level 1 or argument module, consisting of elements of syntactically relevant semantic interpretation based on the interaction between lexical and constructional templates. Hence, the first...

Over the past three decades the world of linguistics has been a witness to the controversy between formal and functional models of language.

Recent research has been done synergistically between FunGramKB, a lexical-conceptual knowledge base, and the lexical constructional model, a linguistic meaning construction model. since concepts are claimed to play an important role in the design of the cognitive-linguistic interface, this paper discusses the methodology adopted in structuring the...

Ontologies have been criticized because they are not sufficiently flexible, and thus cannot capture the dynamism and complexity of reality. However, they have increasingly come into focus because of the need for knowledge management in both general and specialized knowledge domains. EcoLexicon is a frame-based visual thesaurus on the environment th...

Natural language understanding systems require a knowledge base provided with conceptual representations reflecting the structure of human beings' cognitive system. Although surface semantics can be sufficient in some other systems, the construction of a robust knowledge base guarantees its reuse in most natural language processing applications. In...

Resumen: La Gramática del Papel y la Referencia es una teoría funcional del lenguaje que permite la representación de un texto de entrada en términos de su estructura lógica. The aim of this paper is to present the format of the lexical level within the framework of FunGramKB (www.fungramkb.com), a lexical conceptual knowledge base that is part of the Lexical Constructional Model (www.lexicom.es). In doing so, we discuss the different features that define the Spanish and the English lexica. El objetivo de este trabajo e...

The aim of this paper is to offer an overview of some of the most relevant heuristic parameters that have been used for the organization of the lexicon in a representative sample of formal, functional and cognitive models. In connection with this, we address the following theoretical issues: (i) the nature of the metalanguage that should be used as...

Within the context of the Lexical Constructional Model, which provides a comprehensive account of the relationship between syntax and all facets on meaning construction, this paper is concerned with one of the major representational modules of the model, viz. a lexical template. It is claimed that a lexical template consists of a semantic specifica...

This paper presents a framework for lexical representation which contains a universal semantic metalanguage. We believe that this new formalism will constitute a significant step forward towards the development of software for machine translation as well as some other technological applications (e.g. image recognition, semantic web, automatic marki...

This chapter addresses the problem of meaning construction in grammar from the point of view of high-level metaphor and metonymy. We argue that meaning construction, in the sense given to this term by Panther (2005), is essentially an inferential activity whether at the level of so-called pragmatic meaning (e.g. implicature derivation, illocutionar...

The discovery of 'linguistic universals' - the properties that all languages have in common - is a fundamental goal of linguistic research. Linguists face the task of accounting for why languages, which apparently differ so greatly from one another on the surface, display striking similarities in their underlying structure. This volume brings toget...

This paper presents an overview of the Lexical Constructional Model (LCM)2. The LCM offers an account for understanding the relationship between lexical and syntactic meaning. Our approach has a functional and cognitive orientation and constitutes an attempt to reconcile a number of relevant theoretical and methodological assumptions from functiona...

For the last several decades we have been living in what has been called, for better or for worse, the postmodern era, a cultural movement or climate of social sensitivity, which, in contrast to the traditional values of the rationalistic, globalizing version of Modernism inherited from the Enlightenment, defends ideological positions based on hete...
Book
The present monograph deals with lexical representation and linking within the framework of Functional Grammar. The notion of predicate frame as originally proposed in 1978 and subsequent refinements of the theory are challenged in that a new format of representing argument taking properties is formulated. This new format opens new lines of researc...

This book provids an account of the English verbal lexicon which not only systematises the meanings of lexemes within a hierarchical framework, but also demonstrates the principled connections between meaning and, on the one hand, the syntatic complementation of verbs, and on the other hand, patterns of conceptualization in the human mind.
