We approached spatial ecology with ecological considerations for conservation of two snake species with resembling distributions along fragmented landscapes of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, Gomesophis brasiliensis and Ptychophis flavovirgatus. Both are Neotropical snakes with allopatric groups, showing intriguing geographic distribution patterns w...
We present the list of Brazilian reptiles for the year 2021. Brazil has 848 species of reptiles whose presence is confirmed within its borders: 38 Testudines, 6 Crocodylia, and 804 Squamata (82 amphisbaenians, 292 lizards, and 430 snakes). If subspecies are counted, the number increases to 885 taxa. This is the third richest reptile fauna in the wo...
We mapped the distribution of two defensive behaviors (balling and head hiding) of Neotropical snakes to evaluate its distribution in distinct phylogenetic groups. Balling behavior was observed in 58 out of the 167 examined species across seven families. Head hiding was observed in a total of 100 species across nine families. From the high prevalen...
We present the first record of Dipsas mikanii Schlegel, 1837 from the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil. This species has a broad geographic distribution in eastern Brazil. We collected two specimens, one from Água Doce do Norte, a municipality approximately 90 km northeast from the nearest previously known locality in the state of Minas...
Accurate and detailed species distribution maps are fundamental for documenting and interpreting biological diversity. For snakes, an ecologically diverse group of reptiles, syntheses and detailed data on distribution patterns remain scarce. We present the first comprehensive collection of detailed, voucher-based, point-locality, range maps for all...
On the basis of direct comparisons of type material, literature data, and a sample of 47 other specimens examined, we synonymize Uromacer Ricardinii, described from São Paulo, Brazil, with Dendrophis aurata, described from Suriname and never found there again. This taxon now will be known as Cercophis auratus. Additionally, we redescribe the specie...
We present an updated checklist of Brazilian reptile species and, for the first time, its confirmed
presence in federation units (26 states and the Federal District). Brazil has the third richest reptile fauna in
the world, with 795 species: 36 Testudines, 6 Crocodylia, and 753 Squamata (72 amphisbaenians, 276 “lizards”,
and 405 snakes). If subspec...
Motivation
We generated a novel database of Neotropical snakes (one of the world's richest herpetofauna) combining the most comprehensive, manually compiled distribution dataset with publicly available data. We assess, for the first time, the diversity patterns for all Neotropical snakes as well as sampling density and sampling biases.
Main types...
Reptiles are one of the most successful groups of vertebrates on
the earth, represented by aquatic, terrestrial, arboreal and fossorial
species. Three main groups constitute them: Testudines (marine
and fresh-water turtles and tortoises), Archosauria (crocodilians and
birds) and Lepidosauria (snakes, amphisbaenians, lizards and tuatara). Atlantic F...
Lema (2004) described Apostolepis tertulianobeui based on a single specimen (a young male) from "hinterland Minas Gerais state". The holotype was originally housed in the collection of Instituto Pinheiros Produtos Terapêuticos S.A. and labeled as IP 1934 (Lema 2004). The Instituto Pinheiros was founded in 1928 in the city of São Paulo, Brazil and b...
Mussurana montana is a poorly known dipsadid snake endemic to elevated areas in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. After the examination of specimens deposited in scientific collections, we update the distribution range of M. montana with five new locality records, including its first record from the state of Rio de Janeiro, and a new nort...
We report Siphlophis leucocephalus in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. This species is now known to occur in ombrophilous and semidecidual forests in the state of Bahia, and Cerrado gallery forests in Tocantins and Minas Gerais. We also review the distribution of S. longicaudatus, a species inhabiting dense ombrophilous forests, ecotones with m...
A nomenclatura adotada segue Carrasco et al. (2012), Grazziotin et al. (2012), Harvey et al. (2012), Hedges e Conn (2012), Nicholson et al. (...
Micrurus decoratus (Jan, 1858) is a poorly known species of coral snake, with a controversial history concerning its geographical range. The lack of consensus among researchers, since its original description, is largely due to the reporting of erroneous localities in publications. Herein we present the geographical range for the species based on t...
The generic-level classification of the rattlesnakes has been almost entirely stable throughout the 20 th and 21 st centu-ries: virtually all authors recognise two genera, Sistrurus Garman, 1884 for species with large, regular head shields, and Crotalus Linnaeus, 1758 for the species with fragmented head scales (STEJNEGER 1895, BOULENGER 1896, GLOY...
A study about the herpetological legacy of the German naturalist Andreas Mayer (1907-1986) (Bérnils & Moura-Leite, 1990) raised 83 specimens from 20 reptile species captured in the Brazilian states of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul (years 40, 50, and 60) and currently housed at the Museu de História Natural Capão da Imbuia (Curitiba). Just in Mayer'...
Dipsadine snakes of the genus Atractus are endemic to the Neotropical region, occurring from Panama to Argentina. Currently, the taxonomic status of most species of the genus is unclear and previous attempts of taxonomic revisions have been local in scale. In this paper we evaluate the taxonomic status of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest species of At...
Red list of fauna of Santa Catarina, Brazil
http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7925.2009v22n3p129
Ditaxodon taeniatus is a striped, racer-like colubrid snake inhabiting grassland savannas in southern Brazil. This species was described as Philodryas taeniatus by the then curator of the Museum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (formerly Zoologisches Museum Berlin, ZMB), Wilhelm Peters, from a single specimen collected by Reinhold...
Sordellina punctata occurs throughout south and southeastern Brazil in the
Atlantic Forest domain (states of São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina). Records from the states
of Rio de Janeiro and Mato Grosso do Sul are questionable. A new record from southwestern São
Paulo extends its distribution west and northward, probably indicating a wider range...
