Aquaculture contributes to economic growth, employment and food security. In the existence of climate change, climate-smart production systems are required. This chapter proposed the use of solar energy, integrated aquaculture-agriculture (IAA), recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), aquaponics and biofloc as solutions for the impact of climate c...
Red worms ( Eisenia fetida ) can convert biowaste and by-products into body mass and become high in protein and lipid content. However, the type of growth media used affects both larval body composition and growth performance. Using recycled organic materials from chicken manure (CM), cow dung manure (CDM) and rabbit manure (RM), the present study...
Photosynthesis and respiration exert strong opposing effects on dissolved gases in earthen ponds. During daylight this provides oxygen to the water while removing carbon dioxide. At night, fish, plankton, and sediment respiration consumes the available O2 and produces CO2. This leads to daily conditions that fluctuate between being hyperoxic and hy...
Aim: To investigate genetic diversity, gene flow and demographic history of frigate tuna (Auxis thazard) populations found in Tanzanian marine waters. Study Design: The study used a descriptive research design whereby fish samples were randomly collected from four locations and the genetic variation within and among the four populations analyzed us...
Plastic is commonly used as biofilter media in recirculating aquaculture systems. Because plastic is relatively expensive and may erode and emit microplastics to the environment, efforts are being made to test and develop more sustainable materials. Five alternative locally available biofilter media were compared with commercial plastic media and e...
Over the last century, water temperatures in Lake Tanganyika have risen due to climate change, which increased thermal stratification and reduced the magnitude of nutrient availability. A rise in temperature increases the C:N:P ratio resulting in a poor algal diet. In addition, lake littoral habitat is experiencing increased sediment load due to de...
Animal and crop production throughout the world generate high amounts of wastes or by-products annually that may possess added value compounds with high functionality. These wastes and by-products may cause negative environmental impacts and significant expenses if not well managed and or controlled. Much of these wastes and by-products is valuable...
The effect of water velocity on nitrification rates in fixed bed biofilters was investigated in three freshwater pilot scale RAS with rainbow trout. Removal of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and nitrite-nitrogen were assessed by NH4Cl spikes and tested at four different water velocities in the biofilters (1.4, 5.4, 10.8 and 16.2 m h⁻¹) under identica...

An experiment was conducted to compare the effects of fertilizer application alone, concentrate feeding alone and combination of fertilization and feeding on water quality parameters and growth performance of sex-reversed Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Three treatments (weekly fertilization with urea and Diammonium Phosphate (DAP), concentra...
This study was conducted to assess body size distribution and Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) of Nile perch (Lates cf. niloticus) captured using three common fishing gears at Magu district in Tanzania. Three landing sites along Lake Victoria were selected for this assessment. Each site was visited twice per week for two months. At each site 10 boats w...
Mariculture has recently been adopted in many parts of coastal East Africa as a source of income and employment to many women and heartbroken fishermen who are the main victim of dwindling wild stock of aquatic resources. The sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra) has for long time been collected and sold as export marine product. Macroalgae (Eucheuma de...
Food quality determines the growth rate of primary consumers and ecosystem trophic efficiencies, but it is not clear whether variation in primary consumer densities control, or is controlled by, variation in food quality. We quantified variation in the density and condition of an abundant algae-eating cichlid, Tropheus brichardi, with respect to th...

where can I get data (at least 30 year back) for temperature and chlorophyll form Indian ocean (only for East Africa)
I want to analyze protein, essential fatty acids (EPA and DHA) and triglycerides in periphyton (attached algae). Can anyone help me with a simple method on how to preserve and analyze my samples? In addition to that, this lake contains carbonate compounds when you scratch periphyton from the rocks. Is it going to affect my results? How could I control this?
