The last century in Brazil was witness to profound changes. Female life expectancy at birth increased from 34.6 years in 1910 to 77.26 years in 2010. At the same time, the educational composition of the population has changed dramatically. In the 1940s, only 25% of the children aged 5–14 years old were enrolled in school. Currently, nearly all chil...

It is recognized that teachers have a crucial role in improving learning outcomes. Since quality differs by teacher, their potential impact on student outcomes may also differ. However, measuring teacher quality and its influence on learning has been challenging in educational research. In this paper we explore the effect of teacher qualifications...

In regards to Higher Education (HE) development and reform, recent and projected evidence suggest that growth in enrollment is likely to be slower (or even negative) as a result of ageing populations. The case of BRIC countries is particularly interesting for the study of the impact of demographic changes in HE because they exhibit considerable div...

Project
The objective of this project is to derive probabilistic population projections for Brazil and its States using the United Nations Bayesian approach. Although the United Nations already provides estimates for Brazil, this research intends to update the parameters of the projection according to the current knowledge of the demographic trends in Brazil. This project is relevant given the promising advances in probabilistic population projections and the fact that improvements in demographic forecasts can definitely contribute to improved decision making in public policies in the country.
