Introduction
Our work addresses taxonomic and floristic studies of vascular plants and fungi. We study the diversity of plants in forested areas and the influence of environmental factors on the distribution and abundance of plants in forest ecosystems. It is of our interest and we work with ethnobotanical inventories. Our main area of work is western Mexico.

The genus Quetzalcoatlia was recently segregated from the paraphyletic genus Graptopetalum and consists of six species, confined to western Mexico, in the states of Jalisco, Michoacán and Colima (Vázquez-García et al. 2023). The alpha-taxonomy of Quetzalcoatlia (Crassulaceae, Saxifragales) has been summarized below, which includes the addition of f...
Two new species are described and illustrated. Echeveria cuevasii shares with E. flammigera typical characteristics of Echeveria of the Nudae series, for instance, a subshruby habit, medium-sized rosettes and short sub spicate inflorescences. However, it differs from the latter by having fewer shorter branches, longer leaves, more flowers per inflo...
As formal education is increasingly valued among rural and Indigenous communities, a common assumption is that local ecological knowledge may simultaneously become devalued or lost. To solve this, several scholars point out that using ethnobotanical knowledge to teach science can be a great way to engage students and help them learn scientific conc...
Background:
High-severity fires are serious anthropogenic threats to forests, as they can cause forest degradation on unrecoverable scales. Therefore, understanding the patterns and drivers of post-fire regeneration is essential to designing restoration proposals.
Hypotheses:
After a high-severity fire, we expected greater species richness and abu...

Functional diversity indices have been used to differentiate the relative contribution of stochastic and deterministic processes that modulate the assemblage of communities; however, knowledge regarding the relative contribution of assemblage mechanisms in forest communities is scarce. We analysed the assembly mechanisms driving forest assemblages...
Protected areas are of paramount relevance to conserving wildlife and ecosystem contributions to people. Yet, their conservation success is increasingly threatened by human activities including habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and species overexploitation. Thus, understanding the underlying and proximate drivers of anthropogenic threats is...

Introduction:
Numbers of alien plant species are rising around the globe, but not all of them become invasive. Whereas introductions have been documented for several decades in some regions of the world, knowledge on alien species in Western Mexico is limited. Here, we study roadside vegetation along an elevational gradient, which includes a protec...

Growing numbers of alien plant species threaten natural ecosystems worldwide. Mexico, as a megadiverse country, has lower numbers of alien species than other regions in America. However, there is a lack of information on the factors that determine the diversity patterns of alien species and their relative importance in the vegetation. The diversity...

Resource availability affects biomass allocation in ways that could influence plant responses to disturbance such as fire. This is important because fire also varies across landscapes in ways that are correlated to resource availability. We hypothesized that plants growing in landscape microsites with a shortage of nutrients and water all...

Little is known about insect and plant diversity in the regions of origin of many cultivated plants. Maize (Zea mays subsp. mays) was originally domesticated in Mexico from the wild annual teosinte Zea mays subsp. parviglumis. The first objective of this study was to compare the diversity of herbivore leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) in annual...
