The homogenous nature of the urban environment rapidly alters community dynamics of extant flora and fauna due to short-term spatial and temporal factors. However, such impacts of urbanization are mostly investigated in terms of taxonomic diversity, while its impact on functional diversity remains poorly understood. Whereas taxonomic information is...

The sub-Himalayan dipterocarp forests of subtropical region in northwest India support 17 species of woodpecker. From a conservation perspective it is necessary to assess the ecological requirements of woodpeckers in these biologically diverse landscapes, which are experiencing habitat modification and decline in some woodpeckers. We studied the fo...

Garbage accumulation around terrestrial nature reserves poses a risk to many species. We monitored animal visitation patterns and foraging behaviour at garbage dumps near a forested area in Uttarakhand Himalaya, India, to examine plastic consumption by animals. We recorded 32 species of birds and mammals visiting garbage dumps and classified them a...

The PREDICTS project—Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)—has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used t...

Ecological impacts of habitat change on woodpeckers remain largely unstudied in regions other than Europe and North America. The sub-Himalayan sal Shorea robusta forests of northwest India have 17 woodpecker species, and a history of management-induced habitat modification. We studied how habitat parameters affect woodpeckers at a community level (...

Owing to its global decline, the Great Slaty Woodpecker Mulleripicus pulverulentus has been categorised as Vulnerable by IUCN. In India, the species is rare and occurs in the sub-Himalayan moist tropical forests from Uttarakhand in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east. Available records indicate that the Great Slaty Woodpecker (GSW) is depende...

We assessed the impact of forest management on woodpecker community structure sub-Himalayan dipterocarp sal (Shorea robusta) forests. We selected eight sites representing four management-based ‘forest types’ (natural unworked sal, old- and young managed sal, and teak plantations). At each site, bird surveys were conducted along 2-km-long transects,...

In May 2008 we carried out a bird survey in Kothri valley of Lansdowne Forest Division, Uttarakhand state, India, which lies between and links two very well known protected areas, Corbett Tiger Reserve and Rajaji National Park. We recorded 150 species out of which 75 showed confirmed and 34 probable evidence of breeding. We found evidence of extens...

Tropical forests have exceptional woodpecker diversity, but little is known about the abundance and diversity of woodpeckers in the Indian subcontinent, particularly for the Shorea robusta-dominated moist deciduous forests of northern India. Our objective was to compare the number of woodpecker species and number of individuals detected using playb...

A study was carried out in a tropical scrub forest in India, to investigate the effects of extractive activities such as fodder and firewood collection, on native bird communities and to study the relative influences of altered vegetation composition and structure. The study was based on comparison between six ‘disturbed’ (extracted) and four ‘undi...

A study was carried out in Sariska Tiger Reserve in India to investigate the effects of anthropogenic disturbance caused by biomass extraction on the bird communities of tropical dry forests. The study was based on comparisons of the avifaunal community as well as vegetation structure between strictly protected (‘undisturbed’) and intensively used...

The present paper describes the bird community of Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan based on studies during the period March 2003 to June 2005. The avifauna of Sariska Tiger Reserve was studied through systematic large–scale field surveys utilizing point counts as well as opportunistic observations throughout the study period. 183 species were rec...

"There is limited information on the ecological effects of anthropogenic disturbance caused by extractive activities such as grazing and firewood collection. A study was carried out in Sariska Tiger Reserve in India, to investigate the effects of disturbance on forest bird communities. Vegetation structural parameters including canopy cover, tree b...

Despite the fact that tropical dry forests are being exploited on a large scale for various forest products, there has been limited evaluation of the accompanying ecological impacts. In particular, there is no information on the effects of widespread biomass extraction such as grazing and firewood collection. This study was carried out in Sariska...

Habitat modification, degradation, fragmentation and conversion pose the greatest threat to biodiversity and ecosystem function in the Anthropocene. I have carried out a number of field projects to study effects of biomass extraction, fragmentation on tropical and subtropical ecosystems. My aim is to derive commonalities in species vulnerability and adaptation across different forest ecosystems, and study changes in community structure and composition caused by these anthropogenic variables.
