Introduction
I am a Ph.D. student in Entomology at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", with a research focus on the taxonomy, distribution and biodiversity of Auchenorrhyncha (Hemiptera), especially in the Balkans and the island of Crete. My work includes specimen-based taxonomy, digitization of entomological collections, databasing, and participation in biodiversity and genomics research projects. I am an active participant in collaborative scientific initiatives such as TaxonWorks.

With the advancement of high-throughput, cost-effective sequencing, the application of genomic approaches to biodiversity research is becoming increasingly accessible and inclusive. As the availability of a reference genomes database is indispensable for genomics research, a recent pan-European effort - the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) -...

The first fossil record of a spittlebug affiliated to Aphrophora Germar, 1821 (Hemiptera: Cercopoidea: Aphrophori-dae) is reported from Bulgaria (Western Rhodopes, Satovcha Graben). The fossil from Middle Miocene deposits represents the first recorded evidence of fossil Auchenorrhyncha in Bulgaria. A forewing illustration of the new finding and rev...

Orientus ishidae (Matsumura, 1902), a leafhopper species native to East Asia, has been increasingly reported in Europe due to its potential role as a vector of phytoplasmas affecting agricultural crops. In this study, we present the first confirmed record of O. ishidae in Bulgaria, collected from Varna town during field surveys in 2024. The occurre...

Background In Bulgaria, the superfamily Cercopoidea consists of 18 species in two families - Aphrophoridae and Cercopidae. Of these, 13 species of Aphrophoridae belong to the genera Philaenus, Neophilaenus, Aphrophora and Lepyronia and five species of Cercopidae are in Cercopis and Haematoloma. Over a period of 25 years of extensive research on the...

Better empirical knowledge of how bat and insect phenology are influenced by seasonal environmental conditions and how this may affect fitness is essential in the face of changing climatic conditions. We examined the winter diet of the Schreibers’ bent-winged bat Miniopterus schreibersii (Kuhl, 1817) from Razhishkata Cave, Balkan Mountains, Bulgari...

The superfamily Cercopoidea (spittlebugs), an insect group in the suborder Auchenorrhyncha (Hemiptera), is represented in Europe by two families – Cercopidae and Aphrophoridae. Currently there are 18 species – 5 of cercopids and 13 of aphrophorids, known in Bulgaria. Two of them – Haematoloma dorsata (Ahrens, 1812) and Aphrophora costalis (Matsumur...
