The extracellular matrix of microbial biofilms is a highly complex scaffold, characterized by a multitude of structurally and chemically heterogeneous microenvironments. Confocal laser scanning microscopy is a valuable tool to study the biofilm matrix, as it allows real-time visualization of fully hydrated, living specimens. The project aims to explore the architecture, composition and metabolic activity of the biofilm matrix, with a focus on dental biofilms.
