Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a technique that can be applied in various fields of science and recent developments in hardware and software allow to increase its power and to decrease the costs of the analysis based on reflectance spectrum in the visible and near infrared wavelength range. This monitoring technique is particularly suitable for pig...
HyperSpectral Imaging (HSI) can be considered as the evolution of classical spectroscopy, where "only" punctual analyses are carried out. The obtained 2D information (i.e. one spectrum for each pixel of the target image) can be thus used to characterize, map and monitor the materials constituting cultural heritage. Such non-invasive diagnostic tech...
The development of studies about conservation of historic centers has highlighted the importance of interventions on the color of the plastered facades. The study of a color plan in city centers has been the subject of numerous debates in Italy, particularly in complex cases such as the historic center of Rome. Over the past thirty years also the d...
Spectrophotometric and colorimetric data obtained during a measurement campaign aimed at supporting the Roman “Villa del Casale” (Piazza Armerina, Sicily, Italy) conservation activities, are presented. Special attention was paid to the possible variation of the chromatic coordinates, possibly due to the interventions of cleaning, consolidation, and...
Bio-colonization is a dynamic and multiphasic process headed by microorganisms. Conventional treatments to process affected stone materials include chemical biocides, whose formulations are mainly composed of quaternary ammonium salts(QAs), reported to be toxic for human health, dangerous for the environment, and not biodegradable. Accordingly, nov...
This paper describes the multi-analytical approach implemented for the study of the oil painting Il Venditore di Cerini made by Antonio Mancini in 1878. The research was carried out to characterize both the original stratigraphy and the alleged non-original varnish on the surface. SEM/EDS analysis showed the presence of pigments already detected in...
Conservation of hypogea and their accessibility by the visitors is a hard question, due to the interaction of different factors such as the intrinsic characteristics of the hypogeal environments and the presence of public. A particular case is represented by the Mithraeum of Marino Laziale, located a few kilometers away from Rome and accidentally d...
Most of the municipalities of the Italian territory are located in areas of high hydrogeological risk, i.e. exposed to flooding and landslides. Consequently, part of the existing cultural heritage on the national territory is located in areas subject to flood risk, which compromises the accessibility, preservation and integrity of cultural heritage...
San Nicola in Carcere, one of the minor basilicas in the historical center of Rome, was the location of a wide investigation campaign of the water-related deterioration causes, present in the lower sector of the apse and adjacent pillars, affected by water infiltrations, mould and salt efflorescence. The results obtained identify the presence of wa...
The 8th International Symposium "Monitoring of Mediterranean Coastal Areas. Problems and Measurements Techniques" was organized by CNR-IBE in collaboration with FCS Foundation, and Natural History Museum of the Mediterranean and under the patronage of University of Florence, Accademia dei Geogofili, Tuscany Region and Livorno Province. Cleaning of metallic threads has been a recurrent dilemma in historical textile conservation.
Careful selection of restoration methods is in fact required because decayed
metallic threads are wrapped around natural textile fibers. This article synthesizes the
results of a conservation study undertaken at the Accademia di Francia in Rome of a
silk v...
A new diagnostic investigation on Annunciata painting by Antonello da Messina was carried out in situ, in the Sala di Antonello of the Galleria Regionale di Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo (Sicily). It was carried out by using INTRAVEDO scanner for IR Reflectography (InGaAs detector) and XRF mapping, in order to investigate, thanks to an innovative eq...
Conservation and restoration of Cultural Heritage assets involves the potential exposure to risk factors for
worker’s health and the environment. From the toxicological point of view, restorers/conservators are
commonly exposed to complex mixtures of different types of harmful substances that could be responsible
for a wide array of toxic effects,...

A diagnostic study was recently carried out on fragments of wall paintings belonging to the decorations of an old Roman residential villa of the Ager Gabinus, in the locality Pratolungo (Rome, Italy). The study was organized in two stages. A first stage, in which small fragments of these painted specimens were embedded in resin to obtain polished a...
The goal of this study is to evaluate the alteration of different pictorial layers, as resulting from the combination of different supports, pigments and binders, according to different irradiation times. Starting from the collected information (i.e. hypercube) chemometric techniques have been utilized to extract and handle pictorial layers informa...
During the restoration work of the famous Busto di Gentildonna, known as Eleonora d’Aragona (by Francesco Laurana, 15th century), belonging to the Renaissance statuary collection of the Regional Gallery of Sicily Abatellis Palace in Palermo (Italy), archaeometric studies have been carried out to investigate the evidence of original colour layers. T...
The use of Hyper-Spectral Imaging (HSI) as a diagnostic tool in the field of cultural heritage is of great interest
presenting high potentialities. This analysis, in fact, is non-destructive, non-invasive and portable. Furthermore, the
possibility to couple hyperspectral data with chemometric techniques allows getting qualitative and/or quantitativ...

Preliminarily to the restoration of the painted Psalter (most likely attributed to XVIIIth century up until then) coming from the rich collection of musical instruments belonging to the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, a non-invasive optical diagnostics was carried out (diagnostics campaign and restoration by the Centro Regionale per la Progettazione e i...
Most of the artworks constituting the collection of Renaissance statuary of Abatellis Palace in Palermo (Sicily) show evidence of colour layers and fragments of gold foil that probably once covered the whole marble surface. The restoration of some of these statues has allowed to carry out archaeometric studies about the painting technique and to hi...
