Although about two-thirds of Nepalese families depend on agriculture as their major source of income, the agriculture is mostly rain-fed and it has been adversely affected by water hazards and the subsequent degradation of resources. Based on case studies from three different geographical regions in Nepal, this research examines how environmental f...
Effects of climate change tend to be more severe where people rely on weather dependent rain-fed agriculture for their livelihoods. In rural mountain communities with limited livelihood options, adaptive capacity is low due to limited information, poor access to services, and inequitable access to productive assets. Few studies have reported on the...
There is a growing understanding that the impacts of climate change affect
different communities within a country, in a variety of ways—not always uniformly. This
article reports on research conducted in the middle hills region of Nepal that explored
climate change vulnerability in terms of exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity across
differe...
Abstract: Nepal’s community forestry (CF) programme is regarded as a successful
example of decentralization in natural resource management that fulfils people’s forest
product needs and enhances environmental sustainability. However, emerging evidence
indicate that community forest user groups (CFUGs) - key institutions in managing
community forest...
This paper makes a case for gender equity in the agricultural R&D system. It reviews the evidence on exactly why it is important to pay attention to gender issues in agriculture and why it is necessary to recognize womens distinct food-security roles throughout the entire value chainfor both food and nonfood crops, marketed and nonmarketed commod...
Mountain livelihoods heavily depend on watershed services. Watershed degradation significantly impacts both the environment and community livelihoods. Climate variability further exacerbates these challenges, reducing essential resources like freshwater, forest products, and agricultural productivity, thereby increasing community hardships and limi...

Community forestry shifts power of management of forest from government to the community. At the same time, the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15(2) aims at sustainable forest management. This study aims at implementing SDG-15 through community forestry management in Nepal. Questionnaire survey method was applied for generating the qualitative...
The latest IPCC assessment reports (2021, 2022 and 2023) confirm the devastating impacts of climate change are being felt with increasing frequency and intensity, with these impacts causing profound changes in the livelihoods of remote communities. People who are heavily dependent on agriculture, fisheries and forestry are particularly impacted, wi...
Forests are viable tools in combating the impacts of climate change, as they are capable of sequestering atmospheric carbon and storing it in different pools. This study aimed to examine the carbon sequestration potential of community-managed Shorea robusta (Sal) forest and assess the practices that have the potential to reduce adverse climate chan...
Nepal’s community forest policies, acts and regulations provide unique example of policy and legal processes that have generated both positive and negative environmental and social outcomes. Community forestry policies and regulatory frameworks evolved substantially since its inception in the mid-1970s, and offer considerable insights for forest se...
ABSTRACT
Given the increasing vulnerabilities and adverse effects of climate change, the
development and implementation of adaptation strategies is essential. This is
particularly so for Nepal where the agriculture sector – the mainstay of the
country’s economy – is highly vulnerable to climate change. As a country that
loses much from climate chan...
Transhumant pastoralism, with its cultural, ecological, and socioeconomic significance, is an important livelihood strategy for mountain communities. Despite its importance, transhumant pastoralism is declining in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region. This study examines the drivers of change experienced by transhumant herders in Bajhang, western Nepal,...

Natural disasters and pandemics are evolving as major global threats that are posing an enormous challenge to socio-economic and environmental wellbeing. Using a real time analysis of the impressive role played by Community Forest User Groups (CFUGs) in Nepal in responding to the 2015 earthquakes (Earthquake-15) and COVID-19, this paper explores th...
Despite widespread participatory governance reforms in the forest sector in Nepal, how forest administration can be re-organised at multiple levels to enable community based forest management remains unexplored. Forest governance reforms in Nepal have involved numerous forms of collaboration and contestation between the state agencies and community...

Despite the urgency of including SRHR in UHC, the 2030 SDGs expressly exclude any text that may be interpreted as a right to abortion, largely due to pressure from the US and other conservative governments.6 This attack on comprehensive SRHR not only threatens the well-being of women and girls everywhere but weakens the mandate of UHC by ignoring t...
Why and to what extent are democratic states, including long-standing, consolidated democratic states, adopting legislation that restricts the ability of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to operate autonomous from government control? This phenomenon is common and expected in authoritarian countries, but surprising in the context of democracies, w...
The Government of Province 5 is preparing its periodic development plan and has
identified Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change (CC) as an important
environment and development agenda cutting across all the major socio-economic
sectors.
This report is about the study of the Province Planning Commission (PPC) with the support from Policy...
Climate change and disaster risk reduction and management are treated as separate thematic issues at both international and national level. The policies, regulatory framework and planning guidelines for disaster risk reduction and climate change are different. There were attempts in the past to harmonize climate change and disaster risk planning at...
Rice is a staple food for over half the global population and is mostly produced by smallholders. Rice cultivation at global level is responsible for over 10% of global agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and about 1.3%-1.8% of the anthropogenic GHG emissions. Taking time series data from the World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organisation, I...
The research was designed to answer how households and local communities in rural Nepal are responding to the impacts of climate change. Using four villages as case study units, a mixed method approach was adopted in a multi-scaled process carried out at community, district and national levels. The research found that adaptation practices being ado...
Community forestry focuses on the link between forest resources and livelihoods and contributes to forest conservation and reforestation. It is widespread in Nepal, with a very high proportion of the rural population involved, and is widely recognised as one of the most successful examples of community forestry in Asia. Through a combination of lit...
The movement of rural households from remote uplands to valley floors and to semiurban and urban areas (internal migration) is a common phenomenon in the middle mountain districts of Nepal. Understanding the causes and effects of internal migration is critical to the development and implementation of policies that promote land use planning and sust...
The (experimental) research on community management of natural resources focuses on social dilemma situations between individuals. However, in most real-life situations natural resources are not only shared between individuals living in a community, but also between individuals belonging to different subgroups within the same community. For instanc...
This research explored how transhumant pastoralism has been sustained and promoted in the context of socioeconomic and climate change in the mountain regions of Nepal. Based on case study research conducted in Nepal’s western mountains, the status, opportunities, and constraints of transhumant pastoralism in the changing context were analyzed. We f...

Abstract
Climate change is impacting the livelihoods and resources of local communities, and climate induced hazards have increased the vulnerability of communities in the rural hills of Nepal. The vulnerability to climate change impacts tends to be greater where the majority of the population are dependent on dryland agriculture for their liveliho...
In Nepal, community forest user groups (CFUGs) as local institutions have demonstrated appropriate institutional arrangements to manage forest resources as commons. The characteristics, functions and roles of CFUGs required to manage commons are well studied and have been translated into practice. Less is known about the role of CFUGs, as local ins...
Abstract
Studies and practices on commons have demonstrated that local institutions can develop institutional
arrangements to manage resources such as forests and water and can ensure benefit sharing mechanisms in a
sustainable and equitable way. The characters, functions and roles of local institutions required to manage
commons are well studied a...
"Nepal is promoting community-based forest management approach known as community forestry as a promising option to fulfill the demands of basic forestry products and to reduce environmental degradation. Both climate change adaptation and resilience models and frameworks are in practice. I would like to know what are the similarities and differences between these two frameworks in terms of theory and practice. More specifically, would like to know empirical evidence on what are the effectiveness and added values of each framework in programming.
I am exploring support on a research design that links climate justice, gender, and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Research experience based on developing country context will be helpful. Please do provide any theoretical and conceptual models that link gender, climate justice, and SRHR.
Would like to know the effectiveness of the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine effective for the second and third coronavirus wave.
Research on how Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is effective for the second and third coronavirus wave?
Please provide any research articles or ongoing projects about role of local institutions in the disaster, specifically in the COVID-19 response.
I am planning to design an applied research and development project to help us to understand linkages between climate change and reproductive health, mainly safe abortion, contraception and maternal health rights. I am keen to know research outcomes or lessons from development projects on how climate change is impacting to reproductive health, and experiences on adaptation practices by individuals, community, government and civil society to address the impacts.
As resilience is increasingly considered as a core of many development and humanitarian projects, I am keen to learn how it exactly cross cuts among socio-ecological dimensions of a development project. Any impact studies in the context of developing countries will be beneficial.
I am looking any papers related to this research.
