Alien and invasive plants are one of the mayor threats for the alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior (Alno-Padion, Alnion incanae, Salicion albae) (priority habitat 91E0*) of NW of the Iberian Peninsula river corridors. A correct management is required to improve the actual conservation status of this riparian habitat. The ai...

The meadows of mowing are disappearing in all Europe and with them, a great associated biodiversity. The main cause of their disappearance are changes in land management (intensification of management where relief allows easy access) abandonment (in mountain areas or wet areas) and urban pressure suffered in the plots closest to the urban or rural...

The European Union is concerned about the reduction of ecosystems and flora biodiversity. Habitats linked to different hay meadows are decreasing in Europe, and this process has led to propose, throughout an Interreg SUDOE Project, a diachronic analysis of these habitats within the Natura 2000 network. To do so, three pilot areas located in the Pic...

1. Macroalgae are one of the biological parameters considered in the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) for establishing the ecological status of coastal water bodies. In order to test the metric used to assess this element in the Cantabrian coast, the quality of rocky bottoms (CFR) index was applied to 164 transects at 28 sites on the coast...

Angiosperms are an important biological parameter for establishing the status in transitional waters. Angiosperms grow from subtidal to upper intertidal zones and are sensitive to the most important pressures present in estuaries. A multi-metric for determining the status of Cantabrian estuaries has been developed by taking into account the angiosp...

A small study area (4,029 ha) was used to build a model of potential brown bear (Ursus arctos) habitat quality. In a first step, based on existing data of bear diets and the calculated coverage of food-producing plants, we established a series of food selection indices. Foods with the highest selection indices for bears included the Umbelliferae, a...

Project
LIFE FLUVIAL is a project designed to improve the state of conservation and sustainable management of Atlantic river corridors taking as a driver the representative habitat of these means: the hygrophilous forest included in the priority type 91E0* Alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior. Over four years (2017-2021), the project proposes a set of best practices to improve the state of conservation of the fluvial corridors of the Atlantic Biogeographic Region and stop the loss of biodiversity: Control of exotic invasive alien plants. Improvement of plant health of river corridors by the partial removal of dead trees infected by Phytophthora. Improvement of the riparian forest through the active (planting) and passive (fences of natural regeneration) restoration. Awareness about the natural values, socio-economic benefits and ecosystem services of river corridors. Training and technical capacity for stakeholders in the management and conservation of river corridors. In addition, restoration of hábitat type 9230 Galician-Portuguese oak Woods with Quercus robur and Quercus pyrenaica, which represents continuity with the 91E0* habitat type, is carried out through the followings actions: Acquisition of land adjacent to fluvio-estuarine shore in Ribadeo (Galicia, Spain) by the procedure of expropriation. Removal of the plantation of Eucalyptus globulus. Removal of exotic invasive alien plants. Planting of characteristics species of the oak forest.
Project
During the last decades, Cantabrian rivers have experienced riverbed's incision, channel narrowing, vegetal colonization, loss of active gravels and abandonment of secondary channels. These changes have been usually related to a general decrease in sediment supply after land-use changes. We analyze: a) long-term geomorphological changes in the channel, b) short-term changes in the sediment movement using sequential Digital Surface Model (Drone flights) and seismograph monitoring, c) statistical analysis of rainfall and discharge trends. We explore their links to afforestation/land abandonment, flood hazards and habitat and biodiversity loss.
