Presentation
In the nineties, John Cairns emphasized the importance of developing a field of «landscape ecotoxicology». Indeed, landscape features influence both abiotic and biotic processes, such as pollutant transfers in the different compartments of the environment, or population dynamics of beneficial organisms. Realistic ecotoxicological scenarios therefor...

Paysandisia archon was accidentally introduced into Europe where it damages endemic and ornamental palms, also threatening the date palm from North Africa. Little was known about sex pheromones in the Castniidae day-flying moth before a recent paper that concluded on the absence of female sex pheromone in P. archon. A putative identification of a s...

The five synthetic pheromone components of the West Indian sugarcane borer (WISB), Metamasius hemipterus (L.) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) were tested in the field. The combination of sugarcane (SC) and the major pheromone compound, 4-methyl-5-nonanol (1) was attractive. However, the addition of 2-methyl-4-heptanol (2) or 2-methyl-4-octanol (3) was...

The synthesis of difluorinated analogue of an insect sex pheromone has been accomplished through intramolecular radical cyclization and lipase-catalyzed reaction. Optically active α,α-difluoroeldanolide and its antipode have been synthesized. Dose-response curves constructed from electroantennogram responses of female moths showed the difluoroanalo...

10-Oxoisopiperitenone and 10-hydroxyisopiperitenone (for which the trivial names vesperal and vesperol are proposed) were identified using various EIMS (or MS-MS), CIMS data and GC-Fourier transform infrared obtained from the female-specific semiochemicals of the longhorn beetle Vesperus xatarti. Their structure was confirmed by synthesis via a Die...

In 2005, the Department of Seine-et-Marne (25 km away from Paris, France) initiated a large project dedicated to monitor the biodiversity (fauna, flora and habitats) on its territory. For the study of the fauna, five vertebrate groups and five insect groups have been retained, among which the saproxylic beetles. This group is monitored by means of...

Males and females of many moth species exhibit important differences in sexual behaviours. Much research in this field has focused on the male-specific behaviour, electrophysiology and molecular biology of sex pheromone reception. Female-specific behaviours have been less well studied although, like male-specific behaviours, they could provide oppo...

Carbon radicals from allyl O-(trimethylsilyl)-alpha-bromo-alpha,alpha-difluoroacetal can cyclize onto the olefinic part regiospecifically to give gamma-lactols in good yield. The lactols are then converted to the corresponding alpha,alpha-difluoro-gamma-lactones. Systematic synthesis of multifluorinated-alpha,alpha-difluoro-gamma-lactones has thus...

Techniques for continuous rearing of Rhynchophorus palmarum, using either a semi-synthetic diet or fresh pieces of sugarcane, are described. Both methods successfully provided small numbers of adults within 4 months. Use of sugarcane was cheaper than the semi-synthetic diet. The method was also useful for rearing R. vulneratus.
