Microbiologists often measure the diameter of inhibition zone of the antimicrobial activity over microorganisms by the disk-diffusion method of Bauer-Kirby. Usually, the measurement process is not accurate enough and it is often done visually with a ruler. More accurate measurements can be done when using photographs; however, when the photographs...

We present the two popular approaches in the teaching of SELECT statements in the introductory database course – the procedural approach and the set-based approach. Our study shows that the procedural approach comes very natural to the students and they tend to prefer it; however it leads them to a " dead end " on very complicated SELECT queries, e...

One generalized form of this problem is: " 3 vessels of volumes M, N and P contain respectively m, n and M-(m+n) liters liquid, where M=N+P, N >P, m  M, n  N and M-(m+n)  P. Divide the liquid in two equal parts. " The solution is frequently done by trial-error. Perelman provided a " billiard " solution to the problem without prescriptions how to...

Question
I understood that the congo red agar is used for detection of biofilms. I wonder if the method can be used also for detection of antibiofilm activity. Could this be a sensible solution:
1. I test a control group of pathogenic bacteria using congo red agar in order to prove that they are biofilm producers;
2. In experimental group I cover the same pathogenic bacteria with plant extract and I check the mix again with congo red agar in order to see if the biofilm still exists or not.
Question
The chlorellin is the chemical compound which is first extracted from Chlorella vulgaris by Pratt in 1944. Spoehr in 1949 wrote that it is a mixture between fatty-acids and hyrdocarbons and its antimicrobial activity may be due to peroxide production; however I find no further sources on the actual chemical composition of that natural antibiotic. Can somebody help me further by pointing articles about the chemical composition of chlorellin?
