Seeking to examine cases of sacrificial love for another that is empathetic, unconditional, and morally redemptive, I focus on writer Jeff Lemire’s and artist Dustin Nguyen’s heralded comic series, Descender and Ascender (published by Image Comics starting in 2015 and 2018, respectively). In the first main subsection, I argue how illustrative ficti...
This is a post-October 7th reflection on Jewish-Christian relations by a post-Shoah Catholic theologian. It thus tries to assess how Hamas’ October 7th killings and kidnappings of Israelis and the subsequent Israeli bombing and fighting in Gaza impact and challenge the current state of Jewish-Christian dialogue. I first discuss the problematic role...

In this article, I examine theological themes in the first six issues of
Gideon Falls (titled the “Black Barn”)11. This will include the comics’
presentation of Catholic themes and imagery, especially through one
of its main characters, a Catholic priest named Wilfred “Fred” Quinn,
as well as two examples of interfaith dialogue. Beyond showcasing a...

The Last of Us, The Last of Us: Left Behind (DLC) and The Last of Us Part II video games embody sustained critical and commercial success, and are some of the most important genre-defining video games of the last decade. The new HBO Series has followed this trend with some 8.2 million viewers of Season One’s finale. The Last of Us universe is steep...
This is a call for papers for an edited book (of mine) under contract with Lexington Books/Fortress Academic Press as part of their Theology, Religion, and Pop Culture series.
The book is titled: The Last of Us: Violence, Ethics, Redemption?
The book examines ethical and theological themes in The Last of Us television show and video games. Propos...
In this article, I first address the call for Catholics to participate in interreligious dialogue and note the absence of Sikhi in most Vatican documents prior to recent times. I then trace recent Catholic-Sikh dialogues or papal tweets about Sikhi or the inclusion of Sikhs at interfaith events. I also argue why Sikh individuals, communities, and i...
Seeking Common Ground is a dialogue between an atheist philosopher and a Catholic theologian. It is about religion and nonreligion, as well as about dialogue itself. The book provides a framework for dialogue grounded in seven key values: Harmony, Courage, Humility, Curiosity, Honesty, Compassion, and Honor. Unlike typical "debates" about religion...
Post-Shoah Christology is embedded in the unique relationship of Jews and Christians, especially Jesus’ Jewishness and the Jewish roots of Christianity, as well as Christian moral failures towards Jews before and during the Shoah. Essential for contemporary Christianity, a vibrant post-Shoah Christology confronts three main challenges, each demandi...

Turning to the novels, Les Misérables, The Brothers Karamazov, and The Plague, this article focuses on theist–atheist encounters within fiction as guides and challenges to contemporary atheist–theist dialogue. It first provides a discussion of definitions pertinent to our topic and a reflection on the value and limitations of turning to fiction for...
In this article, I examine atheist critiques of the New Atheists. The goals are both to highlight the diversity of atheist views and to examine how these intra-atheist dialogues and exchanges can advance atheist-theist dialogues and partnerships. As is commonly stressed, many New Atheist works tended to treat religion in a fairly provincial, negati...
Abstract Focusing on the Bosnian war (1992–1995), and its lingering consequences, this article turns to witness testimonies to situate and evaluate the place and value of interfaith dialogue in a post-conflict setting. It particularly focuses on the horror of neighbor killing neighbor, a seemingly intractable divide for any hope for future reconcil...
In this personal reflection and analysis, I, as a Catholic theologian, grapple with the haunting theological question of Jewish scholars, David Patterson and David Berger: Is Jesus, for Jews, “superfluous to salvation?” In light of major advances in Christian-Jewish relations and dialogue, most recently in the 2015 Vatican document, “The Gifts and...
Our public square is in need of much refurbishment, if not reconstruction. Access for many seems barred by various ideological platforms and walls. Some are deemed too much of this, another too much of that: liberal, religious, anti-Trump, anti-Brexit, pro-life, anti-gay—whatever the label or brand—and some access points are opened, others closed....
This is a book hoping to embolden doubt and sharpen unanswerable questions, all in the context of loving the self and one another. Ridiculously, it believes the world can be healed through such a hope. It is especially addressed to those allergic to the word "faith," and others who feel confident and proud in the faith they profess or system of tho...
Cambridge Core - Church History - The Future of Interfaith Dialogue - edited by Yazid Said
This article examines why liberation theology needs to be a core resource in religious education settings, especially in Catholic secondary schools. It will first touch on key tenets of liberation theology and the reasons why it was silenced and underused. It will then analyse poverty in the Jewish tradition as an interfaith resource and challenge....
This article is about a beautiful book by a not so beautiful (racist, in fact) author, Forrest Carter’s The Education of Little Tree (1976). I will first reflect on the usually fraught (and sometimes cosy) relationship of literature and morality. I then will give a flavor of the moral fiber of Carter’s novel and then turn to some darker undercurren...
