How do children conceptualise their own development? From their point of view, what serve as constraints for their movements
in time and space? The theoretical framework of the experiment described here was a cultural historical first person developmental
perspective. The concept of transition is here put in use to capture the children’s experience...
In this paper the notion of border will be examined in a cultural life course perspective. I will investigate borders as psycho-cultural constructions created to enable and control meaning-making in the intersection between subjects engagements and concerns and collectively constructed and guiding meanings. An empirical analysis of one boy's life c...
In accordance with Esteban;Guitart and Moll's proposal of the notions of Funds of Knowledge and Funds of Identity as complementary, this paper investigates the notion of identity and its applicability in an educational setting. Our analysis adds a historical developmental dimension to the notion of Funds of Identity without which, the culture as we...
Pædagogisk Psykologisk Tidsskrift 61 (4) pp- 42-61)
This article provides a theoretical perspective based in ecosystemic, community and developmental psychology aimed at conceptualizing prevention as resistance. The notion of resistance is built on a well-known developmental logic, namely that difficulties and challenges tend to spread and multipl...
We investigate abandonment of certain public schools in areas of gentrification in Copenhagen and the processes meant to repair such community ruptures. Theoretically, the study builds on socio‐cultural psychology and dialogism. The intervention conducted built on the premises of meaning‐making, dialogue and collaboration in and across the communit...
For many years, we have been lucky to be part of seminars, workshops, and summer schools, guided by Jaan Valsiner. These arrangements have taken place all over the world and included scholars from all over the world. In this global nexus, participants had a degree of common general orientations and sometimes overlapping interests (e.g., education)...
Diabetes technology is an integral part of the lives of children with type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, children's experiences with these technologies are often overlooked. Furthermore, little is known about psychosocial aspects of technology use during children's transition to adolescence. The aim of this study was to explore how children with T1D p...
The social representation of elder people is one of decline and loss. This is supported by psychological research that works on the level of functions. In this paper, the theoretical lens of functions is replaced with a cultural developmental lens. Drawing on the theoretical framework of Cultural Life Course, the paper sets out to explore aged life...
The project investigated the development of more sustainable managerial practices than the widespread New Public Management. The concrete case concerned the public Danish daycare sector and included all groups of actors (children, pedagogues, parents, Centre leaders, administration and politicians) aiming at inventing structures and practices, whic...
In concluding this volume, we come back to the questions that guided this book, namely, to explore when and how does the educational intrusion become a resource for individual and collective creativity, and when does it create unconstruc-tive or destructive tensions for the individual and/or for the community. We consider the suggestions developed...
This introductory chapter opens the field of education in a cultural
developmental perspective and explains how and why learning and development can
be considered as cultural processes. It discusses the way the tensioned dialogues and
creative constructions between education and culture are conceptualized in this book
and outlines the guiding quest...
In a world where the global engagement and international dialogue intensifies, some areas of cultivated knowledge suffer from this dialogue and this has consequences for people and communities. We propose education to be such a case. The global dialogue in education tends to be restricted to and mediated by standardized measurements. Such standards...
Pretend playing is a universal activity. It turns the familiar cultural world upside-down and for a while it locates the playing children within new situations, new lives and new identities. Here, absorbed in a play-world, the children get a view of the limitless “what-if”, from which cultures have grown. The chapter begins by introducing theories,...
Investigations of children’s development as persons are conspicuous by their absence in developmental psychology. Building on central concepts in the work of William Stern and James Mark Baldwin, such as experience, tensions, convergence, persistent imitation and sembling, we propose to draw a basic frame for such an investigation. The empirical in...
This editorial points back to the papers published in volume 18. It also announces the transfer of the position of main editor of Outlines-critical practice studies. One of the papers in vol. 18 relates directly to what is foundational to Outlines-critical practice studies: The encouragement of critique. For this reason it has been given some exten...
viden.
In this chapter, we investigate imagination in children's pretend play in a cultural life course perspective. This perspective underlines the relation between play and the cultivated and personalized life of the players. It points to the processes in which meaning making takes place through play: imaginative playing transcends the immediate context...
Building on cultural psychology and taking inspiration from the George Simmel’s work, this introduction considers resistance as an act of human and societal creativity and thus as developmental at its core. Resistance can be local, such as fleeting moments in one person’s life, or a collective and historical revolt. The chapters in this section int...
This book is about resistance in everyday life, illustrated through empirical contexts from different parts of the world. Resistance is a widespread phenomenon in biological, social and psychological domains of human cultural development. Yet, it is not well articulated in the academic literature and, when it is, resistance is most often considered...

In this chapter we investigate the role of children’s engagements in pedagogical practices within the field of center-based child care. Based on a historical analysis, it is argued that children’s engagements have played a central and crucial part throughout the varied pedagogical approaches that make up the Danish tradition and its pedagogical met...
In the three previous chapters theories of the development of the subject have
been elaborated by focusing on the dynamics between the person and his or hers
cultural environment, conceptualized as the process of subjectifi cation. Each
chapter addresses this process quite diff erently and highlights diff erent aspects
of this process. In the follo...
The Transgenerational Transmission of Trauma (TTT) refers to to the way in which children may be affected by growing up with parents who prior to their birth have been exposed to traumatic experiences. Trauma may take many forms, but the focus of this chapter is on experiences associated with being a refugee; such as being exposed to organized viol...
In this paper, we investigate how young unemployed people make sense of their situation in the face of adversity. Drawing on Cultural Life Course Theory and a new line of research on imagination, this multiple-case study examines the role of imagination for young unemployed people. Based on three in-depth interviews with young academics, we find th...
What determines our judgment, our concepts and reactions, is not what one man is doing now, an individual action, but the whole hurly-burly of human actions, the background against which we see any action. Seeing life as a weave, this pattern (pretence, say) is not always complete and is varied in a multiplicity of ways … And one pattern in the wea...
This editorial introduction frames the special issue by highlighting its choices: examining transitions in the educational process, so as to highlight common features of many educational phenomena, often considered separately; and conceptualise transitions as time-embedded processes. Such theoretical choices raise methodological questions, among wh...
