In an effort to push STEM education beyond content-based memorization and towards the development of skills-based practices applicable to the careers of tomorrow, this paper describes how an interdisciplinary STEM course called Bioinspired Design improved self-reported measures of Innovation Skills in undergraduate students. In this course open to...

The Likert item response format for items is almost ubiquitous in the social sciences and has particular virtues regarding the relative simplicity of item-generation and the efficiency for coding responses. However, in this article, we critique this very common item format, focusing on its affordance for interpretation in terms of internal structur...

In India, more than 276 million children and youth were out of school for extended periods since March 2020 due to school closures in response to COVID-19. A key challenge has been how to measure the impact of responses to continuity of learning both to ensure more effective responses in the event of further disruptions, but also to help the educat...

From a measurement perspective, a variety of analytic approaches are fast emerging in the data mining and exploratory analytics branches of the field of data sciences. In particular, for learning analytics, more theory is needed showing how the analytical approaches are related to one another and to their respective purposes when measurement is inv...
Chapter
This chapter presents the results of a study on adolescents’ attitudes towards the three world religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as towards non-religious worldviews. We ask the following questions: What are students’ attitudes towards diversity of religion and worldview? How do attitudes towards each of the four groups (Muslims,...
Article
The aim of this study is to validate an instrument measuring students’ academic behavioral skills and engagement—skills identified as vital for student achievement. We inspect the reliability and validity of the survey with respect to item fit, factorial structure, relations with academic performance, and the fairness of the items across student gr...

The main purpose of this study was to design and verify the quality of an assessment aimed at diagnosing scientific misconceptions among students enrolled in 10th-grade biology subjects. A sample consisted of N=200 students from schools under the administration of the Office of Secondary Educational Service 31, Nakhon Ratchasima province. We employ...

Specialty mental health probation caseloads have shown promise in reducing recidivism for justice-involved people with mental illness. However, assignment to these caseloads may be stigmatizing due to labeling effects. We examined (1) whether assignment to specialty probation versus traditional probation is associated with greater internalized stig...
Article
This paper first develops a framework for exploring options that one can have in psychometric modeling alternatives for multidimensional measurement situations. In particular, we focus on situations where there is seen to be value in both (i) the individual dimension outcomes (i.e., “having your cake”), and (ii) the summative combination of those m...

This study investigates the reliability and validity of the International Study of City Youth (ISCY)-survey, which among others aims at measuring students’ academic behavioral skills and engagement. The academic behavioral skills scale consists of three dimensions (factors): Self-concept; Social skills; and Self-management. The engagement scale als...

This paper describes the validation of the Foundational Learning Skills (FLS) module, a newly developed instrument in the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS). Using the field test data of the FLS module in Kenya and the data from Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) and Early Grade Mathematics Assessment (EGMA), the study shows that the new...

In this article, we outline the development and validation of an instrument for the assessment of attitudes towards religious diversity. The instrument uses four parallel scales, which evaluate attitudes towards Muslims, Christians, Jews and towards Non-religious people. Each scale is subdivided into eight parallel profile types and tests for the a...
Article
Many people involved in the justice system and people with serious mental illness are required to participate in psychosocial treatment, whether they want it or not. With these clients, case managers, probation officers, and other providers are tasked with both promoting client recovery (a helping, therapeutic role) and protecting community safety...
Article
In this article, we describe a software system for assessment development in online learning environments in contexts where there are robust links to cognitive modelling including domain and student modelling. BEAR Assessment System Software (BASS) establishes both a theoretical basis for the domain modelling logic, and offers tools for delivery, s...
Chapter
This chapter reviews the state-of-play in overlap between learning analytics (LA), specifically data mining and exploratory analytics, and the field of measurement science. First, some basic ideas are introduced in a broad way. Then a current definition of LA is introduced, and main ideas of the area are discussed. Second, the logic of measurement...
Chapter
This chapter starts from the perspective that the current conceptualization of educational assessment is out of date, but particularly with regard to conception of information and communication (ICT) literacy. It provides a summary of the conceptual changes in the idea of ICT literacy in four main steps: a concentration of knowledge about computers...
Article

This study investigated how the frequency and level of assistance provided to students interacted with prior knowledge to affect learning in the Voyage to Galapagos (VTG) science inquiry-learning environment. VTG provides students with the opportunity to do simulated science field work in Galapagos as they investigate the key biology principles of...

This article summarizes assessment of cognitive skills through collaborative tasks, using field test results from the Assessment and Teaching of 21st Century Skills (ATC21S) project. This project, sponsored by Cisco, Intel, and Microsoft, aims to help educators around the world enable students with the skills to succeed in future career and college...
Article
This paper summarizes initial field-test results from data analytics used in the work of the Assessment and Teaching of 21st Century Skills (ATC21S) project, on the “ICT Literacy — Learning in digital networks” learning progression. This project, sponsored by Cisco, Intel and Microsoft, aims to help educators around the world enable students with t...

This paper starts from the perspective that the current conceptualization of educational assessment is out of date, but particularly with regard to conception of information and communication (ICT) literacy. We initially provide a brief summary of the idea of a 21st century skill, then trace the conceptual changes in the idea of ICT literacy in fou...

This paper compares the performance of students at a high-performing U.S. public school (n = 64) on the advanced placement (AP) chemistry exam to their performance on the ChemQuery assessment system. The AP chemistry exam was chosen because, as the National Research Council acknowledges, it is the “perceived standard of excellence and school qualit...
