The literature on qualitative research ethics is vast and longstanding. Many scholars have written autoethnographic accounts and methodological overviews of the ways that they navigate ethics in practice. Despite various definitions and categorizations of research ethics, to date, in relatively few empirical investigations it has been outlined how...

This article examines the role of memory and remembering in qualitative research, proposing a reflective practice where memories serve not only as a backdrop but as active participants in shaping inquiry. By revisiting and engaging in remembering, we, as qualitative inquirers, forge deeper connections with subjects, encompassing the human, the natu...

Qualitative researchers often take for granted that the process of translation involves finding in the target language an equivalent linguistic expression to the one used in the source language. The validity of translation in qualitative research is thus based on the equivalence between the original and the translated texts, and correspondingly, un...

As a Buddhist, I first introduce how Buddhism came to be central in my life and eventually influenced me as a qualitative researcher. I exemplify how the concepts of all-beings-are-equal, karma, the five precepts, and repentance might inspire a quali...

Ethical research practice remains a pertinent issue for qualitative researchers. Many scholars have recognized the insufficiency of merely relying on the ethics board review and argue for engaging with varying approaches and conceptualizations of ethics (e.g., Ellis’ conception of relational ethics or Dennis’ notion of ethics with critical perspect...

This paper re-constructs the higher education environment and experience that an international doctoral student negotiates within. Four video segments from September 2020 to April 2021, with a common theme of funding-searching, were selected as data. With narrative analysis, key components from the narratives were identified and further re-organize...

Qualitative researchers often take for granted that the process of translation is about searching for a linguistically expression in the targeted language equivalent to the original language. Combining insights from translational theories and Phil Carspecken’s critical qualitative methodology, we examined this assumption by interrogating what under...
Presentation
With the aim to contribute to the ethical practice in qualitative research, this work draws upon Buddhist teachings of all-beings-are-equal and repentance, adding insights to the discussion of researcher-participant relationship and reflexivity. With a thematic analysis of the researcher’s research journal, data reveal how the teaching of all-being...

Secondary school students following a problem-based human-centered robotics (HCR) curriculum designed and built robots as a way of engaging with engineering design practices. In this preliminary analysis, we identified a shift in a focal classroom from technically to socially focused robot designs across two semesters. This poster considers how tea...
