Introduction
I am an Assistant Professora of Theory of Architecture in the University of Évora. I am Principal Investigator of a research project about Malagueira by Álvaro Siza to be proposed to the World Heritage List (UNESCO). My research is focused on sketches and projects by Álvaro Siza as representations of an architectural vision, encapsulating the ideas of "research by design" in practice, experimental perception and augmented reality, and spatial complexity.

The communication focuses on the development of advanced research, inserted in the PhD program in Architecture. The aim is to present the chosen line of research and discuss its relevance. Apresentação sobre o arquivo do projeto da Malagueira de Álvaro Siza Vieira na Drawing Matter.
Álvaro Siza Viera began in March 1977 the constant, methodical, and continuous, almost compulsive, recording of drawings in A4 notebooks. This record, which spans over the 22 years he spent working at the Bairro da Malagueira project in Évora, allows us to understand his conception and design process, and reflects the ability of drawing to serve as...
This research was aimed to understand the evolution of Malagueira’s typologies and their variations. The urban plan for Malagueira was initiated in 1977 by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, for an area of 27ha and the construction of 1200 dwellings.
The houses in the Malagueira neighborhood are considered an example of ingenious design. In fact, on...
In 1977 Malagueira at Évora began to be built. Drawings show that "plan" and "project" have unfixed borders and the events on the landscape connect and create a dialogue between the user and the place. The drawing, in its gradual approach to scale reveals a geometric abstraction that becomes architecture. Events are pieces of architecture that will...
Emptiness is as an intrinsic part of the city, as it is a path of continuous evolution or its reverse and stagnation. Because of the process, expectant spaces arise, between the opportunity and the discomfort of failed processes. Alvaro Siza’s Quinta da Malagueira estate in Évora is an example of a large urban area designed with a mixed plan that p...
This paper analyses the instrumentality of drawings by Alvaro Siza Vieira in
his architectural practices at the specific case of Malagueira (Évora,
Portugal, 1977-2005). Malagueira acts as a major urban project that entails
almost all the praxis of the architect: the urban plan, the landscape design,
both private (dwelling) and public (equipment’s)...

A Competition on Architecture and Landscape Design: the construction of a common research. Pedro Guilherme, Sofia Salema and Conceição Freire - Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade de Évora
In a methodological approach where the design trial is structuring, two different instrumental branches are considered: at conceptual level, related to thought; and at the level of action.
By acting on these two scopes it becomes evident that the handling potential and applicability that an instrument contains induces possibilities that, in the pro...

Research by design is a broader concept that includes “practice-based research” and “practice-led research” which means that we are talking about two kinds of methodologies of research: one involves research through practice and the other involves research about practice. The difference is methodological, because one is research where the inquiry i...
