Research project objectives/ Research hypothesis (in English) Xenoestrogens (XEs) are a class of endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs). XEs act as inappropriate estrogens and may disrupt normal estrogenic signaling. XEs are widely found in nanomolar to micromolar concentrations in drinking water, human milk, diary milk, surface water, sewage effluents, sewage sluges, etc. EDCs can upset normal endocrine functions via non genomic or membrane-initiated mechanism even at a very low concentration (µgL−1 and ng L−1 range). Therefore, there is a continuous search for new and more effective methods to remove XEs from effluents before they are discharged into surface waters to prevent pollution of groundwater. Various advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are reported to be effective for EDCs degradations. Despite of a great number of currently available AOPs there is still a continuous search for new and more effective methods to generate hydroxyl radicals. Moreover, in the current studies only removal efficiency is reported, whereas all possible metabolites are not identified as well as their esterogenisity and toxicity are not studied. In this study we examine the degradation of several representative compounds (the pesticide p´,p´- ichlorodiphenylethylene (DDT) and its products, bisphenol A, endosulfan, the most commonly used herbicide - atrazine, dioxine) by Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). In this work we will concentrate on Fenton reaction and related chemistry and homolysis of peracetic acid in the presence of MnO2 as a main source of hydroxyl radicals for degradation of EDCs. The knowledge of degradation path as well as products of parenting XEs and their estrogenic activity will be available as a results of this project.
