URBAN LAND USE CLASSIFICATION THROUGH SATELLITE IMAGES SPECTRAL MIXTURE LINEAR ANALYSIS. Urban environments are heterogeneous by nature. Hence, to allow quantitative studies it's necessary to simplify them in combinations of basic land use/cover materials. The Ridd's VIS model (1995) is a conceptual representation that allows simplifying urban envi...

Land-use changes adversely may impact ecological entities and humans by affecting the water cycle, environmental changes, and energy balance at global and regional scales. Like many megaregions in fast emerging countries, Tamil Nadu, one of the largest states and most urbanized (49%) and industrial hubs in India, has experienced extensive landuse a...

The real-world urban systems represent nonlinear, dynamical, and interconnected urban processes that require better management of their complexity. Thereby, we need to understand, measure, and assess the structure and functioning of the urban processes. We propose an innovative and novel evidence-based methodology to manage the complexity of urban...

Contudo, a ênfase predominante no d...

Project
The main purpose of this study is to identify the drivers that hinder the implementation of nutrition initiatives in the Sahel region, and further contribute to understanding how programmes and initiatives can be improved and materialised in an effective reduction of malnutrition prevalence. Under this scope, this study will be developed with a stepwise approach, to cover the several dimensions of the conditions that influence malnutrition patterns and trends, and to integrate, with the required comprehensive perspective, the multiple data sources and methods that have become recently available, specifically Artificial Intelligence and Machine-Learning approaches.
Project
Provide robust scientific evidence on how the natural and built urban environment shapes the neural system underlying human cognitive and emotional processing, with a perspective that also incorporates age, gender and vulnerable groups’ specificities. Furthermore, it has the goal to map such neurobiological reactivity through time and space as the urban landscape change. Grasping the spatial cognition of the citizens’ behaviour and decisions while interacting with their real-life surroundings will be a breakthrough, as it will foster more inclusive urban design resulting in better individual health and well-being.
Project
This project focuses on the mobility and location impacts of teleworking and e-shopping adoption in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. As teleworking and e-shopping could have strong impacts on the total amount of travel, mode choice and activity spaces, they can influence directly the achievement of more sustainable urban mobility patterns.Complementary, teleworking could influence the location decisions of households, as teleworking could allow people to live further away from their jobs, the location of offices and, together with e-shopping, influence the location of retail. These location effects might contribute to sprawl and, consequentially, reinforce negative effects on mobility patterns as well as other negative impacts associated with urban sprawl. Informing policymakers about the effects of teleworking and e-shopping on mobility patterns and urban form, its drivers and the conditions in which these impacts could be minimized, will allow the definition/adoption of policies that will contribute to goals 11, 12 and 13, by increasing sustainability levels in cities, more sustainable consumption patterns and promote mitigation measures to combat climate change.
