Current forest cover of Europe differs not only from its past area or pattern, but also from Europe’s potential vegetation. This is a result of two main factors, i.e. climate changes and the anthropogenic influence. Both factors have affected tree species composition of forests, forest coverage, fragmentation, the structure of forest ecosystems, as...

Traditionally the purpose of National Forest Inventories (NFIs) has been to provide continuously updated information regarding the state of a given nation's forest resources, including their timber volumes, species composition and sustainable development. But with increased international reporting requirements - to the FAO, the ITTO, the UN's Frame...

The spatial dynamics of landscapes are the consequence of a multiplicity of relations among physical, biological and social forces. So, it is essential the assessment of the driving forces related to Land Use and Land Cover changes (LULC) to understand the change process. The stochastic modeling technique in Geographical Information System (GIS) -...

AN INSIGHTFUL GUIDE TO THE CONCEPTS AND PRACTICES OF MODERN LANDSCAPE ECOLOGY Elements of geography, conservation biology, soil science and other disciplines factor into landscape ecology's rich analyses of the ecological and environmental forces at play across different terrains. With its unique, organism-oriented approach to the subject, Applied...

National Forest Inventories (NFIs) collect and provide a large amount of information regarding the forest volume, carbon stocks, vitality, biodiversity, non-wood forest products and their changes. Forest stands variables data are paramount to understanding their composition, especially on those related with understory characteristics and the covera...

Dear friends, me and Francisco Castro Rego, from Portugal, together with the other two colleagues and authors, Steve Bunting and Eva Strand from the United States, will attend the US-IALE 2019 Annual Meeting, from April 7 to 11, in Fort Collins, CO. We will present the Oral Communication "Applied Landscape Ecology: a new textbook" will release our...

In Portugal a specific project aims to reduce the risk of “flavescence dorée” phytoplasma (FD) propagation in vineyards in order to increase the capacity to mitigate the severe FD damages. The project is applying more efficient monitoring tools, making use of eco-friendly technologies (smart traps) for automatic detection and identification of the...

Short-rotation coppices (SRC) are intensive cultivation systems aiming for biomass production for energy. About 32% of Portugal area (Figure 1) corresponds to uncultivated lands (shrublands and pastures) where these cultivations could be installed. We estimated the available area in eight counties from the Centre and South of the country (Chamusca,...

Although the studies on the germination of Quercus suber (cork-oak) acorns are not new and there is a great deal of knowledge about their germination behaviour, this study has a particular interest due to the provenance of the seeds and the interaction of three factors: the size of the seed, the cutting of the scar and the substrate of growth. The...

The Summary for Policy Makers is a brief document based on information included in the “State of Europe’s Forests 2015”report. This document offers a comprehensive overview of European forests, their current status, trends and policy responses related to them, as well as an insight into sustainable forest management (SFM) in Europe. The State of E...

Knowledge of spatial and temporal changes in forests is vital for understanding relationships and interactions between anthropogenic and natural phenomena as well as forecasting future landscape scenarios. Land use dynamics between 1990 and 2005 were studied overlaying Portuguese Land Use Map (1990) and the Portuguese National Forest Inventory (200...

The geographic distribution of the pine sawyer (Monochamus galloprovincialis), vector of the pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), is presented for Portugal mainland, according to the UTM 10x10km square grid. Field surveys were conducted in an area of approximately 15% of the maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) forested area. Simultaneously,...

Forest types, assessed by the percentage cover of seven height layers, can be used as an important tool for the evaluation and management of soil and water conservation, wildfire management and biodiversity conservation. Different layers are important for the different ecosystem processes. While all layers are equally important for rainfall interce...

We have assessed the fire proneness of the main forest types in Portugal classified according to the main species, using three different approaches: the use of resource selection ratios applied to burned patches, the proportion of randomly located plots that were burned and the proportion of burned National Forest Inventory plots. The results allow...

Fire management activities can greatly benefit from the description of wildland fuel as a fire behaviour predictor. A forest typology developed from the Portuguese National Forest Inventory that combines cover type (the dominant overstorey species) and forest structure defined as a combination of generic stand density (closed or open) and height (l...

For the first time in Portugal, simple variables describing the vertical structure and the composition of forests on the Portuguese mainland were included in the 2258 sample plots of the National Forest Inventory (DGF 2001). The vertical forest structure was assessed by percentage cover of seven height classes and the composition of the different l...

Fire is a major driving force of landscape change in the Mediterranean region. The objectives of this paper were to explore the implications of landscape change and wildfires in a region of northwestern Portugal for the diversity of breeding birds. Land use cover for the years 1958, 1968, 1983 and 1995 was obtained from aerial photography for a stu...

In this paper we test the hypothesis that landscape changes in a region of Northern Portugal (Minho) in the last 40 years could be predicted from socioeconomic and political history. The major predicted changes were related to agricultural abandonment and afforestation. We further predicted that these changes contributed to increased fire risk. Ana...
