Subsequently to (a) the 2008 international crisis, and (b) the 2010 European sovereign debts crisis, four countries of the Euro Area were forced to comply with programs of financial and economic adjustment, as a condition to financial support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the European Central Bank (ECB) and the European Commission (EC...

In Western societies, punk represented a benchmark for rupture towards the existing social structure while providing a soundtrack for it. So, it is in this context that we will approach the Portuguese punk considering its importance in a society engaged in relatively recent processes of democratization and modernization. Thus, we propose here to ta...
The impact, influence, and legacy of the Sex Pistols have inspired a considerable number
of works, with those of Jon Savage being perhaps the most paradigmatic. However, these
studies are generally centered on Anglo perceptions of the Sex Pistols and of punk more
broadly. We believe that it is important to understand the Sex Pistols cultural and

In Portugal, the contemporary specificities stemming from a socio-history marked by a decades-long dictatorship mean more unstable forms of youth transition extend throughout life and become a social condition in adulthood. This circumstance goes far beyond the professional dimension of life: it is mirrored in the family, parenting, leisure, body a...
This article presents findings from a cross-disciplinary, international project that seeks to understand the importance of music-making for young people (aged 18–35 years) as a source of well-being during the COVID-19 crisis. A key objective of the project is to evaluate whether music-making has contributed in palpable ways to young people’s indivi...
In recent years, a growing body of research has been reassessing the role of higher music education institutions in light of the challenges posed by the dominant neoliberal economic system and the growing sensitivity to the reproduction of social inequalities in access to higher education and the labour market. This open access book offers internat...
This article focuses on two countries usually represented as (semi-)peripheric: Portugal and Brazil. At stake is a metaphorical perspective of the Global South as equivalent to most (although not all) low-income and often politically or culturally marginalised territories. The use of this concept marks a shift from a central focus on development or...

While they continue the deserving and rightly “cultured” practice, which has been however launched since the first appearance of this magazine, at least one of th...
For some years, the tradition of the numbers Education Sciences & Society has been that Italian signatories inter-generationally represent different ages and histories regarding Italian scientific pedagogy or, otherwise, Italian academy and university. While they continue the deserving and rightly “cultured” practice, which has been however launche...
The authors of this book’s chapters seek to demonstrate that the categories first postulated by Simmel should continue to be used to explore contemporary issues, namely developing societies that are more inclusive, reflective, creative, and sustainable. The book shows, through reference to Simmel, how to study the social phenomena of multicultural...
In late modernity, artistic-social movements play a central role in renewing societal processes. This article aims to understand how the do-it-yourself (DIY) ethos builds bridges of understanding for these challenges, taking the artistic practice of fanzine production of Fernanda Meireles as a starting point. Based on a qualitative methodology, we...
Democracy today has been facing dilemmas that challenge its legitimacy, from voluntary and forced migration, to economic, social, political, and cultural crises, war, and environmental crises, among others. However, what the literature shows us is that the active involvement of citizens in the reflection, contestation, and resolution of these dilem...
The environmental crisis has been one of the main concerns of contemporary societies. In this interstice, we have emphasized (eco)feminist action about activism, arguing that both perspectives materialize in specific logics of agency and resistance. This article starts with a tripartite theoretical-conceptual approach around indigenous (re)existenc...
Portuguese society is no longer defined by a division between the urban and the rural (Lobato and Weck 2014). The lines separating the two contexts have become diluted, giving rise to peri-urban areas such as Tâmega – an amalgam of the intensive industrialization of the 1980s and the post-modern city – since the concept of periphery no longer fits...
The latest world events have impacted the socioeconomic and artistic life of migrants (pandemic, wars and climate change). The feminization of migration has caused a change in the profile of migrant women. These migrant women have been suffering countless experiences that denounce iniquities, some expressed through graffiti art. Objective: To analy...
DIY, Alternative Cultures and Society is the first academic journal dedicated to the theme of DIY (do-it-yourself) and alternative cultures. It is a fully peer reviewed international journal that publishes original research and review articles focusing on all aspects of DIY and alternative cultural practice and consumption in a global context. The...
British fashion of the 1990s manifests a fin-de-siècle social anxiety. Facing a systemic crisis of culture, some designers embodied the sociological concepts of risk and carnivalization in their creations. This attitude is reflected in the emergence of themes such as the wasted look and abject aesthetics, epistemological solutions arising from a le...
In this article, we elaborate on the video performance Mimoso, created by Juliana Notari in 2014 in the Global South. This performance makes a strong criticism of the established cruelty—on humans and nonhumans—owing to the presence of an idea of coloniality of power. Indeed, we propose here an analysis of this video in order to identify the main a...
Once conduits to new music, frequently bypassing the corporate music industry in ways now done more easily via the Internet, record stores championed the most local of economic enterprises, allowing social mobility to well up from them in unexpected ways. In this way, record stores speak volumes about our relationship to shopping, capitalism, and a...
The issue of social exclusion in relation to young people has been one of the most prominent research areas in the field of social sciences. There have been several studies that reflect the various modalities of advanced marginality, whether in political, economic, geographic, social and cultural terms; however, there have been few studies that hav...
Music has always been a concern for sociology, and its classic authors attest to this. We begin this article – which is essayistic in nature – with a substantive analysis of this tradition that continues to (re)shape the sociology of music today. Amongst these classics, we would like to highlight its greatest name: Max Weber. In fact, this author d...
In this article, we explore the importance of Portuguese independent record stores by highlighting their role as catalysts of scenes and sociabilities, specifically in the major cities of Lisbon and Porto. We examine how these stores can be understood not only as spaces of consumption, but also as places where rituals are enacted and communities of...
The eleventh Sustainable Development Goal, “make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable,” can only be truly answered when there are no individuals in our societies who feel forgotten by the various social institutions. Not in Education, Employment, or Training [NEET] are among those most affected by this social invi...
Elliot begins his book with the story of a memory recovery, or ‘history lesson’ (2022, p. 3) by Príncipe Discos [Prince Records], a Lisbon music label. In 2012, the label re-released, digitally and free of charge, the album DJs do Guetto Vol. 1, originally released in 2006 by the band of the same name. It was the trigger for the musical genre that...
Gender issues have fortunately become a topic of growing interest in research into contemporary music and artistic scenes. With the aim of obtaining data on the exclusion of gender in the current conditions imposed by COVID-19, the investigation is focused on learning how women in the cultural and artistic sector have offered resistance to the cult...
Noting the inadequacy of the understanding of music as a mere superficial phenomenon of a sociopolitical expression, the article presents how Fado Bicha emphasizes the importance of performativity in an improbable resistance founded in fado. It seeks to demonstrate how the performances and songs of Fado Bicha assume themselves as producers of denun...
Youth cultures and their place in the city are a favourite topic of social scientists, with more than a century of research existing on this subject. This chapter begins with a diachronic conceptualization of the concept of youth and youth cultures in their different modes of transition to adulthood, considering their disruptive and deviant tendenc...
In this chapter, we present a theoretical and analytical tour of the concept of Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) young people in the European context to broaden the adaptation of this concept to the Portuguese reality. We also propose a theoretical reflection on arts-based research and new perspectives for intervention in relation to...
The so-called ‘new music industry’ has signalled many changes in the way that musicians approach music-making as a career and source of livelihood. A particularly salient feature of this has been a reduced emphasis on recorded output as a means of making money from music and a focus instead on live performance. This sea change was famously marked b...
The COVID-19 pandemic both accelerated social and household inequalities and made them more visible as the spatial and social divide between work and home life was broken down. Historically, during times of crisis or huge systematic change, women have served as shock absorbers. Shock absorption of systemic change by women, as well as that of our pl...
The subject of this issue has the same theme as the 5th Week of Excellence promoted and organized by the University of Macerata Department of Education, Cultural Heritage, and Tourism Sciences in October 2021. These weeks are cultural events of invaluable heuristic workmanship and specialist education, targeted both at the world of academia and res...
This article is the result of a partnership and disciplinary crossing, directed towards social intervention through the arts. In this sense, we used a multi-sited ethnography (Barbosa et al., 2020), i.e., we focused on the study of two distinct empirical cases, one in Portugal and the other in Italy, in order to understand and emphasize how sociolo...
Our ultimate goal in this article was to bring the artistic and scientific perspective into dialogue with the arts. Our spokesperson was the researcher and rapper Capicua aka Ana Matos Fernandes. Through her writings, we were able to explain and understand the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on artistic, cultural and creative work. Moreover, we pr...
As we know, rock performances and lifestyles have frequently been linked to a whole series of disorders, substance uses and abuses, and risk behaviours, commonly expressed in the epitome of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll. In this context, there are countless enumerations of these themes in the lyrics and videos of artists or rock bands, and there is al...
Against the background of the global COVID-19 pandemic, this chapter presents an in-depth vision of the relationship between music-making and the domestic life of Portuguese artists. The chapter presents and discusses data from an international project related to the Portuguese reality. Then, on the basis of some 40 semi-structured interviews with...
The expansion of far-right movements constitutes a global phenomenon that has translated into the emergence and strengthening of numerous organizations, parties, and especially into the conquest of power in many countries in Europe, North America, and Latin America. In this article we will try to account for this phenomenon, first by presenting and...
The Bloomsbury Handbook of Popular Music and Youth Culture provides a comprehensive and fully up-to-date overview of key themes and debates relating to the academic study of popular music and youth culture. While this is a highly popular and rapidly expanding field of research, there currently exists no single-source reference book for those intere...
Questions
Question (1)
Contrary to the traditional idea of cultural identity, which spoke of a solid and fixed self, umbillically related to a territory and collective history, nowadays we must take in account the volatility of these identities. More and more, this volatile nature proceeds from a flux of social uprooting, permanent technologic innovation, physical mobility of goods and ideas – all of which are deeply rooted in late modernity. This volatility is often put into focus in the plastic nature of the human being and the provisional character of social roles and bonds. Crane’s perspective on this is of course of the utmost importance. The global music culture, spread in the media conglomerates, is mostly centred in English language countries (in that process excluding the remaining ones), with the repertoires of major labels focusing ever more in a small number of international stars.
