Introduction

Many populations of threatened American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) and vulnerable wild leek (Allium tricoccum) have declined and gone extinct because of overharvesting in Canada. We assessed the impact of harvesting on populations of these species in stochastically varying environments and estimated their extinction thresholds and minimum viable...
In a series of forest ecosystems in S Quebec similarity among ectomycorrhizal fungus communities was strongly and significantly correlated with tree community similarity, even when controlling for the effect of environmental similarity. When tests were made with a similarity matrix based on those tree species known to be hosts of ectomycorrhizal fu...
A quantitative, probabilistic approach to species and population assessment can be used to inform a species’ legal at-risk designation and help determine priorities and targets for population recovery and protection measures. To that aim, we analysed the viability of a large number of individual populations of a species across its range in Canada,...
On the west coast of Newfoundland (Canada) about 40% of the provincially rare plant species are not protected within the system of three national parks and two ecological reserves existing in the region. This study examines how heuristic algorithms can be used for selecting areas filling this gap while minimizing potential land use conflicts. One a...
Simple regression models for predicting fruit-body production of epigeous ectomycorrhizal- basidio-mycete communities in forest habitats from familiar meteorological variables were built and examined. I used data from two seasons of field collection in southern Quebec (Canada) and from a previously published data set from South Bohemia (Czechia Rep...
The yellow giant hyssop (Agastache nepetoides) is an impressive herbaceous perennial plant that can reach over 2 metres in height. In the Greater Montréal region (Québec, Canada), it grows on calcareous soils in semi-open habitats. This species is likely to be designated threatened or vulnerable in Québec, and the local population in the Oka Nation...
Preventing the introduction of and managing established invasive alien species (IAS) in protected areas, such as national parks, require substantial resources and affect operations, visitors, neighbours, Indigenous communities, and a diversity of stakeholders. Therefore, identifying priorities is critical and needs to be transparent and defensible....

The hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is an aphid-like insect native to Asia, that attacks eastern and Carolina hemlocks (Tsuga canadensis and T. caroliniana). A hemlock tree infested by HWA may survive for 4-10 years, but weakened trees often succumb to diseases and attacks from other insects and are easily broken and thrown by wind.
Currently, Kejimku...
This file contains the R script used for running the multi-site PVA reported in the published paper.
Pitcher’s Thistle is a rare plant endemic to the dune ecosystems of the Great Lakes, that typically experiences large fluctuations in numbers through time and space. The XL file contains the roset count data used in the PVA reported in the published paper.
Guidance for Managing Invasive Alien Species in Parks Canada’s Protected Areas is a series of non-prescriptive technical documents to guide Parks Canada’s resource conservation managers and practitioners in the field. Each of those guides summarizes and organizes the best available scientific information on a specific invasive alien species or rela...
This report is one in a series that provides a regional summary of observed and projected climate change trends and impacts facing all of Canada’s national parks, national marine conservation areas and certain national historic sites. This is an internal document to Parks Canada and is intended to encourage and inform broader conversations and supp...
Strychnine is a neurotoxin and an active ingredient in some rodenticides which are placed in burrows to suppress pocket gopher (Thomomys talpoides) populations in range and crop land in western North America. The population level impact was modelled of the use of strychnine-based rodenticides on a non-target snake species, the Great Basin Gophersna...
The distribution and abundance of woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) have declined dramatically in the past century. Without intervention the most southern population of caribou in eastern North America is expected to disappear within 20 years. Although translocations have reintroduced and reinforced some populations, approximately half o...
KEY FINDINGS
Biodiversity – the variety of species and ecosystems and the ecological processes of which they are a part – has a paramount influence on Canada’s natural capital and its ability to deliver services. Those services, in turn, contribute to human health and well-being and support a wide range of economic sectors. Climate change, interact...
Bayesian Belief Network to explore management of Caribou in Pukaskwa National Park of Canada
Anticipating the effects of climate change on biodiversity is now critical for managing wild species and ecosystems. Climate change is a global driver and thus affects biodiversity globally. However, land-use planners and natural resource managers need regional or even local predictions. This provides scientists with formidable challenges given the...
The uncertainties encountered while using the IUCN-COSEWIC criteria can be numerous and of different kinds. For instance, it is often unclear to what extent a species’ attribute meets a qualitative criterion, such as “continuing decline”, or the uncertainties with a quantitative indicator of a species’ status, such as population size, make the like...
EXAMS stands for “Expert system for Assessing impact of Management activities on Species”. It was developed primarily to help determining whether or not an activity will jeopardize the survival or recovery of a species at risk in Canada. The system may however be general enough to be used for other applications that require population prognosis. Th...
The Species at Risk Act in Canada requires that an activity affecting a listed species can be authorized only if it does not jeopardize the survival or recovery of that species. Making such a determination ideally requires a reliable prediction of how the species' population dynamics will respond to that activity. In most cases knowledge gaps and e...
Aim The objectives of this study were: (1) to compare radial growth patterns between white oak (Quercus alba L.) and northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) growing at the northern distribution limit of white oak; and (2) to assess if the radial growth of white oak at its northern distribution limit is controlled by cold temperature.
Location The study...
Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is a North American perennial clonal herb highly prized for its medicinal value. It is threatened at the northern range limit with only 20 populations known in Canada. To assist recovery planning, 13 populations were sampled to model dynamics. The fate of all ramets in one square-meter was monitored from 1998 to 20...
1) In Canada, activities that might affect species which are listed under the federal Species at Risk Act require a permit. These permits are only issued, if the activity does not jeopardize the survival or recovery of a listed species. But the impact of human activities on populations in the wild are notoriously difficult to assess.
2) Simple BBN...
The prevalence of secondary forests is increasing across tropical landscapes, but the effects of these environments on the population dynamics of understory species and on their capacity to regenerate after harvest remains poorly documented. We compare the population dynamics of the understory bromeliad, Aechmea magdalenae, between old-growth and s...
Using occurrence data and Bayesian statistics to define critical habitat for Green dragon (Arisaema dracontium) among islands of the St. Lawrence river in Québec (Canada)
Successful conservation of nontimber products and their rainforest habitats requires the identification of optimal harvest regimes, the accurate estimation of maximum harvest limits, and the implementation of those limits by local harvesters. We used a combination of participatory research techniques and demographic modeling to determine maximum su...
1 The clonal perennial herb Helianthus divaricatus and the clonal shrub Rhus aromatica reach the northern limit of their distribution in southern Québec (Canada), where both are rare, but they are more common southwards in the adjacent province of Ontario. We tested whether peripheral populations of these species maintain themselves by having highl...
