Urbanisation in Europe has been the main cause of agricultural land fragmentation and agricultural land use loss and has given rise to significant socio-economic and environmental costs, particularly in urban regions. Accordingly, there is a consensus in the literature that sustaining urban and peri-urban agriculture are significant towards urban s...
Suportada n...
Globally, land use/cover is facing irreversible damages caused by human activities and climate changes. These damages have occurred as a result of land conversions from natural and seminatural areas to anthropogenic uses such as urbanisation and intensive agricultural practices. Land conversions correspond to one of the main environmental threats c...
Agriculture provides the largest share of food supplies and ensures a critical number of ecosystem services (e.g., food provisioning). Therefore, agriculture is vital for food security and supports the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) 2 (SDG 2 - zero hunger) as others SDG's. Several studies have been published in different world areas with diffe...
To effectively plan and manage the use of agricultural land, it is crucial to identify and evaluate the multiple human and environmental factors that influence it. In this study, we propose a model framework to identify the factors potentially explaining the use of agricultural land for wheat, maize, and olive grove plantations at the regional leve...
Agricultural statistical data enable the detection and interpretation of the development of
agriculture and the food supply situation over time, which is essential for food security evaluation in any country. Based on the historical agricultural statistics, this study produces a long spatial timeseries with annual production values of three cereals...
Background:
The role of demographic and socio-economic determinants of COVID-19 transmission is still unclear and is expected to vary in different contexts and epidemic periods. Exploring such determinants may generate a hypothesis about transmission and aid the definition of prevention strategies.
Objectives:
To identify municipality-level demogr...
Future land use/cover change (LUCC) analysis has been increasingly applied to spatial planning instruments in the last few years. Nevertheless, stakeholder participation in the land use modelling process and analysis is still low. This paper describes a methodology engaging stakeholders (from the land use planning, agriculture, and forest sectors)...

Different mechanisms drive land use and land cover changes (LUCC). This paper presents an exploratory analysis aimed at understanding the complex dynamics of LUCC based on farmers’ intentions when they are faced with four scenarios with the time horizon of 2025: (1) A0 – current social and economic trend; (2) A1 – intensified agricultural productio...
Decisions about future land use are complex and involve a wide range of factors. The perceptions, intentions, and interests of the stakeholders involved are usually unpredictable. Different stakeholders manage land by choosing different future options and revealing different expectations. Greater proximity to built-up areas confronts farmers with c...
The fragmentation of agricultural land is influenced by political, economic, social, ecological and environmental factors, which affect its dynamics, patterns, structures, and functions. However, a deep analysis aimed at examining agricultural land fragmentation and its driving forces, and predicting future agricultural land fragmentation is needed...
Land-Use/Cover Change (LUCC) reacts to demographic pressures, economic trends, or improved transport networks. Urban growth with implications on LUCC patterns can be measured using a diversity of methods. Our study derives from Tobler's first law of geography: 'everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant...
To address sustainability challenges of agro-ecosystems located in Mediterranean urban regions, this paper focuses on the multidisciplinary subject of urban agricultural systems. To better understand the diversity and dynamics of peri-urban agro-ecosystems and the main drivers of their sustainability, we compare six case studies located in Southern...
As the world is becoming increasingly more urbanized and built-up areas (that have an artificial cover as a result of human activities such as: urban fabric, industrial, commercial and transport units, mine, dump and construction sites, sports and leisure facilities) are endangering functional diversity, several environmental and spatial planning p...
The return of agriculture as a subject of debate in the realm of urban sustainable development is a recent phenomenon. Its presence is anchored in the recognition of the multifunctional role of agriculture and its importance in the conception and success of a more sustainable city.
This study proposes a conceptual framework to analyse the socio-sp...

This approach brings together stakeholders, policy-makers and researchers - in an agricultural peri-urban region of Portugal, the Lezíria do...
The conceptual and methodological debate on urban form has grown in the last decades to recognize that social, economic, demographic and political processes can contribute to the development of new urban forms, especially those related to urban sprawl, as well as to find alternative methodologies for measuring them. Spatial metrics derived from lan...
Land use and land cover change (LULCC) dynamics have been particularly strong in the Mediterranean region, due to its historical development and to agro-pedoclimatic conditions favorable to human settlement. This area has undergone in the 1950s and the 1980s intense urbanization processes that has followed different trajectories. Urban expansion co...
Planning enforcement is " probably…the weakest link " in the planning system (Dobry 1975 in Mckay & Ellis, 2005). Detection of breaches of planning control can profit from analysis of aerial photography or aerial imagery (Harris, 2011). Despite its limitations systematic monitoring of land use changes provides an important valuation in planning com...

The article analyses urban and agricultural dynamics in the Leziria do Tejo region. Located on the Lisbon third metropolitan ring, this region is currently facing the decline of agriculture along with an urban sprawl that is occurring minaly through the conversion of farmland. According to the Regional Spatial Plan (PROT-OVT), one of the solutions...
Agri-urban systems provide agro-environmental and feeding services to the cities (Zasada, 2011; De Bon et al., 2010). However, peri-urban areas are complex systems because of their geographical and productive characteristics (Van Veenhuizen, 2006; Moustier and Fall, 2004) and also for its stakeholder’s diversity (Allen, 2003; Dossa, et al., 2011)....

The two main objectives in this paper is, first, to understand if there is any relationship between several documents that have focus mobility, accessibility and transports aspects, at several territorial scales, as european, national (focused in portuguese case) and regional (focused in Lisbon region case), and, second, understand how can this set...
The future of agricultural areas in regards to urban sprawl is studied in three steps. Firstly, we analyse the encroachment of urban sprawl onto agricultural land in two regions of Southern Europe through GIS tools : Languedoc-Roussillon in France and the North-West of Portugal. Secondly, we survey documents, laws and tools of public policy availab...
In which aspect Metropolization processes contribute to the recent dynamics of Portuguese urban system, thus confronting actual spatial planning?
Due to spatial complexity of the phenomenon and the need of scale articulation, metropolization introduces a new way of thinking in urbanism and spatial planning. We propose an analysis of the spatial pr...
Languedoc-Roussillon is a region of France where rural and urban areas have historical links based on wine economy. In recent years, this Mediterranean region has seen major urban transformations, affecting land use in a rapid manner, mostly in terms of farming land. These changes are characterized by the increasing urban contiguity in coastal area...
For almost 40 years cities' peripheries and the coastal areas of Languedoc-Roussillon in France and of Portugal have been known important urban dynamics that affect natural spaces, and most particularly the agricultural areas. These dynamics are due to periurbanization, i.e. the increase of urban sprawl and of spatial fragmentation, thus contributi...
The metropolitan dynamics typology of the Portuguese urban system is the product of a methodology based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A GIS data describes six dimensions of metropolisation (population, economy, urban organisation, society and culture, networks and territorial organisation), based on a matrix of entities or indicators. Su...

In this paper we analyze the spatial development of metropolization in continental Portugal by proposing a methodology for the classification of metropolitan dynamics. The aim is to identify municipalities that form "natural" metropolitan groups and municipalities that form non-"natural" groups (i.e. geographical areas of metropolitan "transition")...
The evaluation of territorial programs and plans has been gaining importance, both in political-institutional speeches and practices and in academic reflections. In Portugal, the structure of planning, operacionalized on a vast number of quite recent instruments, requires an effort of articulation in the guidelines to various scales (from European...

In recent years, several vector borne diseases (arboviral) have (re)-emerged and spread all over the world with major consequences. Latest epidemics of Zika, dengue, and chikungunya (CHIKV) have heightened the need to understand the seasonal and geographic range of transmission. Understanding the drivers of this recent epidemics triad, i.e., CHIKV-Dengue-Zika (CDZ) is a major public health priority. Across Europe in general, and most particularly in Portugal, new outbreaks must be anticipated, prevented and controlled so as to avoid major social and economic crises. We aim to investigate and model the CDZ vector Ae. albopictus by exploring and explaining its relation with environmental and climatic conditions, and integrating its spatial and temporal patterns of occurrence. With this it will be possible to simulate outbreak scenarios in order to help public health officials in preparing contingency plans.
Explore the application of well-established and recently developed GIS-based approaches, as well as spatial data sources to modelling agricultural land use and production dynamics in the Portuguese context.
