Wikipedia is the most widely used online reference in the world, offering over 60 million articles in more than 320 languages. Major tech companies utilize it to train influential AI systems and rest on it to define facts. Despite its reach, limited discussion exists about the overarching discourse it promotes regarding humanity. This is surprising...
We propose the development of 'digital reflexive sociology', understood as the use of digital methods and Big Data to reflect on the social and historical circumstances of sociologists and sociological thinking. To show this approach's potential, we employ Wikipedia as a ‘reflexive tool’, i.e., an external artefact of self-observation that can help...
Wikipedia, a collaborative crowd-sourced platform, is the largest, most visited online encyclopedia. Since it spreads information freely in more than 300 languages, many users, tools, and dashboards rely on its content. Hence, there is a need to maintain its fairness and completeness. However, previous research has indicated the existence of a sign...
The gender gap in Wikipedia content is a complex phenomenon that comprises several asymmetries, discursive dimensions, and social concerns. However, there is no theoretical framework to organise this complexity consistently. Based on writings by Foucault, Deleuze and Tkacz, we interpret Wikipedia as a 'field of visibility' and provide a framework t...

This article describes a systematic method to explore the structure of this memory in biographies of people with the same nationality. The results are exemplified by analyzing the biographies of notable Chileans across generations.

This article presents the Networked Pantheon, a relational database of biographies of globally famous people spanning the last 5,500 years of human history. This article proposes that an appropriate assessment of the geographical bias in multilingual Wikipedia's content should consider not only the number of articles linked to places but also their internal positioning - i.e. their location in different languages and their centrality in the network of references between articles. This idea is studied e...
We already know which countries have controlled the spread of COVID-19 better and what "good practices" have enabled them to do so. Eventually, some of these policies could be replicated in other countries. But it is not enough to make a well-informed public intervention. We also need quickly available indicators of how actively populations are res...

We propose the development of ‘digital reflexive sociology’, understood as the use of digital methods and Big Data to reflect on the social and historical conditions of sociologists and sociological thinking. The analytical and aggregative form in which multidimensional poverty is currently being investigated could be fruitfully complemented with a relational-reticular approach, which studies the structure of linkages between different types of deprivation and identifies the emergent properties of poverty. This paper defines the methodological steps of...

Latin America is a region with less economic and human development than Western Europe and the United States, but tends to show higher levels of happiness. Is that inconsistent? This article reviews the individual conditions that favor happiness of the Latin Americans and how they could explain the apparent contradiction in the macrosocial indicato...

In this paper, the implicit theory of Fate and history is systematized and then classified within the different schools of thought on the human action. It is argued, f...

In this interview, Professor Hans Joas was invited to explain his position in the face of some classic, always valid and inexhaustibly reformulated problems of social theory and social sciences. Action, modernity, progress, contingency, values, human rights, methodology and scientific demarcation are just some of the issues discussed here. The main...
