Cuba annually exports pineapple as fresh fruit to European markets, however, the tropical conditions in which pineapple cultivation takes place cause burns on the fruit, mainly in the summer months (June-August). Sunburn damage causes economic losses by subtracting the commercial value of fresh fruit. In this work, the phenomenon of sunburn in pine...

For many years, the main pineapple cultivar grown in Cuba was 'Spanish Red' and some small area planted with Smooth Cayenne. As a result of grower demand, a project for the rapid expansion of production of ‘MD-2’ vitroplants in Cuba resulted from a coordinated effort between Cuba and Republica Bolivariana de Venezuela governments using tissue cultu...

In Cuba, the national production of pineapples (Ananas comosus var. comosus) was based exclusively on ‘Red Spanish’ for many years. In 2009 the ‘MD2’ hybrid (Gold Extra Sweet) was introduced. The adaptation of ‘MD2’ pineapple to the edaphic-climatic conditions of Ciego de Avila was successful, despite being sensitive to different factors such as dr...

To achieve good quality and adaptation of micropropagated plants to field conditions it is necessary that the acclimatization stage occurs without problems. At the Bioplantas Center the micropropagated pineapple (Ananas comosus var. comosus) is established a period of acclimatization of 5 months and the same could be reduced with the use of new fer...

The etiology of the mealybug wit of pineapple (MWP) disease is associated with a complex of ampeloviruses (Closteroviridae) named Pineapple mealybug wilt-associated virus -1 to -5 (PMWaV-1 to -5). The aims of this study were to determine the specie of PMWaVs associated with MWP symptoms in pineapples plants hybrid ‘MD-2’, and virus presence in asym...

Fertilization of vitroplants in the acclimatization stage is vital to achieve a good plants adaptation to different conditions of in vitro culture. The pineapple that has a period of acclimatization of 5 months can diminish the same if new variants of fertilization are applied more efficient so this work has as aim to evaluate the effect of five pa...

Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni is a perennial herb native to Paraguay. Multiplication by seed is not recommended for commercial production because of the low percentage of germination and high heterogeneity, due of this, Stevia micropropagation has proven to be a method that ensures high efficiency and genetic stability; however, information on the use...

Stevia rebaudiana Bert. (Asteraceae) commonly known as a natural sweetener, is a zero calorie value natural alternative source to traditional sugar (sucrose). It is native from Paraguay and Southern Brazil, but is now cultivated on a commercial scale in other countries. S. rebaudiana has also been used as a medicinal plant to cure many diseases lik...

INTRODUCTION Pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) is a tropical fruit of great commercial value with production being second only to bananas. 'MD-2', the most important fresh fruit cultivar, has dominated the fresh fruit market in recent years (Loeillet et al., 2011). The commercial importance of 'MD-2' has resulted in the need for plantlets to ra...

Morindaroyoc L. (Rubiaceae) root cultures were established for the production of anthraquinones (AQs). Three independent experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of different levels of indole-3-acetic acid (0–22.8μM), culture duration (15–75days) and subculture number (0–4). The following indicators were recorded: root fresh weight per Er...

Garcinia aristata (Griseb.) Borihidi seedlings growth in vitro under dark and light conditions was compared. Shoot tips and single node explants from both etiolated and non-etiolated seedlings were also compared for shoot formation. Light significantly inhibited plant height, stem elongation, the number of nodes per seedling and the protein content...

Synthetic seed technology may be of value in breeding programs and allow the propagation of many elite genotype-derived plants in a short time. In this work, a range of artificial endosperm treatments of Cleopatra tangerine zygotic embryos were evaluated for suitability for encapsulation of somatic embryos. Different complexing ions in the form of...
